[SOLVED] No wifi on my Dell D630. LM17 Cinnamon

Post by CJ in a Jeep »

Hello,
I've been dabbling with Linux Mint now on my two different computers for about 6 months now. I installed LMDE-Cinnamon 64 bit on my desktop with ZERO problems. Thank you Linux developers for the easy to install and useable OS! My success with LM17 Qiana isn't quite complete yet. The first problem I am working on is wifi recognition. As I installed LM17 64 bit Cinnamon on my Dell Latitude D630 the wifi did not work. No problem... I plugged in a cable and that got me to the internet. I spent a few hours tinkering with no success. I did go to the driver manager and once there I found that my wifi had a driver choice to make AND that my device wasn't enabled. So I chose a driver and enabled the device. The problem is now my laptop doesn't show any wifi at all. There is no wifi choice in network connections or in "network". Yes my wifi switch is flipped on. As I have googled for answers and skimmed the forums I understand that there is a problem with Broadcom adapters but I can't even get my laptop to recognize any wifi at all to fix the Broadcom issue.
Any help you can provide is appreciated.

ok,

so try this (make sure you have an ethernet connection)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe b43
Allow several seconds for the network manager to scan for available networks before attempting a connection.

PatH57,
Thank you for your help. I have run all those commands in the command line but nothing seems to have changed. I did copy the text with each command and can post it here if you'd like. I also took a screen shot of the results. It seems to have hung up just after clicking enter on: sudo modprobe b43.

I forgot to mention that I did try inputting "sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer" prior to using your suggested inputs.

With a wired connection up and running >>> Open Driver Manager (System Settings > Device Drivers (at the bottom of the page)) and let it think for a while. If it has a recommended driver, click the bullet next to the recommendations and then click Apply Changes...

Reorx,
Thanks for taking the time to help. A few weeks ago when I installed the new SSD and installed LM17 on it I went into the driver manager and there was an option for a wifi driver AND an option to enable my wifi device. I chose a driver (wish I had noted which one it was) and then enabled the device. Ever since then my wifi driver has not populated that dialog window. The only driver that shows up is my video driver.

same reason modem-manager and network manager work together. Do you have an internal 3G on this laptop?

In the process of following these troubleshooting steps I had to close the command window and interrupt an ongoing process. I forget which one but it had hung up and not changed in many minutes. Would it hurt if I re-accomplished these commands in an effort to find the one that hung up?
