New to Linux and Mint Mate ... this week

Post by bawldiggle »

AS a pimply faced youth I started with (not "on") main frames ... well ... pushing hand trolleys around of punch cards, loosing a few on the way and sometimes they got wet.
I didn't last long in IT. One thing I liked about the dark-ages was the aircraft-hanger sized "computer rooms" were air conditioned.

For about 10 years I have wanted to try Linux. The sense of adventure

A white knuckle ride 8 to 10 years ago (maybe more).
The Linux forum was like trying to have a conversation with aliens. I gave up.

Gradually MS is wearing me down with more bovine excrement. Win8 was the last straw and now the concept of Office360.

Since about 1998 I have written a lot of Excel tools and addins (too many to count) for myself and clients but with MS Office 2010 they no longer "support" VBA.
- don't cringe, I know VBA is notorious for bloat. I spent 12 months (spare time) writing an addin to rebuild xls, xla, xlt, files from the ground up.
- no copy pasting, read and write spreadsheets + all objects on them, modules, classes ... but I gave up when VBA was destined for the chop.

Now one week away from my 69th birthday I am entering a new realm. Wish I was 40 years younger, very interesting times.
Decided on Mint-MATE after about 2 years research in my spare time (I am still working for $$)
The Mint forums is like a breath of fresh air.
So far I have managed to create a bootable thumb-drive with Mint-MAT 17 ... and it works !

Tomorrow is an install of Mint-MATE 17

Thank you to the clever people who have got me started
