Minty Madness :)

Post by MintyMorkyMindy »

~ soap box time ~

... lots of opinions, some postive, some not so much ...

:D

Thank you Linux Mint. :D :D :D

A great operating system, and better for me than Windows 7.

Windows 7 is needed for games, but that is it.

I tried Windows 10, but it was boring, a hybrid of Windows 7 and the awful Windows 8.1.

I tried Ubuntu and the Unity interface was painful. Ouch ! Ubuntu have lost their way. Sad, very sad.

Linux Mint, 17, works well. So well, that I am trying not to use Windows 7.
Oh ... it didn't recognise the Windows 7 install, neither did Ubuntu (latest) ... in the end Mint got its own HDD. I tested from USB pen, and Mint was lightening fast.

Now if only the Linux software did likewise:

* linux software is lacking
* nothing like Notepad++, remembering sessions is a plugin, when such should be standard
* I hate anything to do with the terminal, so no GUI means no joy

Most used programs Windows 7

Pidgin IM = all good Linux

Notepad++ = need to use Wine as the native text/html editors aren't good enough ... Scite is lacking development

Paint.NET = yet to find an alternative (Forget GIMP and the ugly interface)

Everything, file search function = yet to find an easy and quick way to search a hard drive (thank goodness for Wine!!!)

Windows 7 = Linux Mint is better all round, much better ... Much faster, better integration, better layout, design, more choice - better everything.

I think Linux Mint is everything that Ubuntu should have been.

...

Suggestion time

Linux Mint editor with automatic sessions save, like Notepadd++

Linux Mint graphics editor, like Paint.NET

Linux Mint fast search, like Everything

The thing is, the Linux Mint people are making correct decisions, and expansion is the way forward.

Oooooo it took me HOURS, but I finally did it ... wooo hooo :D

I deleted the pesty Stylish and Mint Search Enhancer from Firefox.

Set as global extensions they could only be disabled and not deleted in Firefox. If the user can disable these, then they should also be able to delete them easily.

Now a savvy Linux guru would have done this with a few mouse clicks, but it took me hours of research, trial and error and I found the path:
/usr/lib/firefox/browser/extensions/ ... delete, delete, delete, be gone! :)

Now to think about that horrid Flash, Shockwave ... they must go too haha :)

Linux Mint is awesome.

Linux software not so much.

Mmmmm, a notepadd++ and Paint.NET replacement?

Pidgin, Filezilla, qBittorrent are :D and so too is Firefox now :D

Recoll looks like a promising replacement for Everything.

Mmmm do I need to install ATI drivers, do they even exist ... more research. Thankfully the house of cards Xorg from a few years ago have been fixed and also the automount of NTFS drives. All very nice now.

Libre Office is brilliant, I just don't need it.

Oh and I need a boot loader option to choose between Minty and Win7 ... I thought I did that, but it doesn't work, Minty loads but to get to Win7 I need to F8 at start up and and choose the SSD.

:)

Oh and, much better to reconfigure like Firefox and Pidgin than the hassle of transferring profiles. Anything export and import works well. Not so much copy and paste ... a lot of junk may be transferred.

just give gedit a try. It's better than any text editor from my point of view.

hinto,
Thanks for the suggestions.

Text editors

None of those text editors are suitable for my needs. At the moment I am making do with Kate. I really need a program like Notepad++ or EditPlus. Multiple pages open at the same time, working accross them and them opening every time. HMTL and CSS support.

Notepad++ for linux would be ideal, and a "Mintpad++" (Linux Mint) versions even better.

Graphics editors

None of these graphics editors meet my needs. Paint.NET is ideal, a well balanced mix of simplicity, user friendliness and power. I have found Pinta, and it looks promising, albeit two years old and simple.

A Linux Mint version of Pinta, "Minta", would be good.

...

Jahid,

I've tried gedit but I am unable to add plugins, they won't download.

***

Excellent software (used on Windows 7 as portable applications)

filezilla
firefox
pidgin
qBittorrent
SMplayer

Most importantly of all, Linux Mint 17 is a better operating system than Windows 7:

1. Install and it just works
2. Install and it is up to date, no need to download masses of updates
3. No need to go near the terminal (that is the Bees Knees! haha)
4. No need to race to install a better firewall or set up the Windows 7 one
5. No need to race to install an antivirus
6. No need to stop programs calling home
7. No need worry about malicious programs
8. No need to deal with Internet Explorer
9. No need to install a third party windows manager, Explorer++ (which is excellent)
10. No need to prefer portable applications, to minimize the workload if/when Windows 7 goes "Blue Screen"
11. Software delivered on a silver platter, Linux Mint "Software Manager"
12. Much faster and responsive operating system, Linux Mint 17 > Windows 7
13. No need to move to a hybrid Windows 7/8.1 with Windows 10 - no benefit at all to standard Windows 7 like needs
14. Modern, well designed, fully competitive, best in class operating system ... Linux Mint 17
15. Not enough AAA games, but things are changing

Linux Mint is everything Ubuntu could have been, should have been, but poor decisions ... a horrid interface

Ugly interfaces:

Windows 8, 8.1
Gimp
Ubuntu Unity

Windows 10 will be the frankenstein of operating systems, a little bit of this (desktop), a little bit of that (tablet) and master of none ... everything one doesn't need will be seen as BLOAT. Can M$ survive two failed operating systems in a row?

In the meantime, Linux Mint should challenge Windows 7 users to test this for themselves. It is still to early to call it, but every sign is that Linux Mint 17 will consistently beat Windows 7 in everything except games and that is enough, the tipping point. Linux Mint needs some aggressive marketing, comparison benchmarks with Windows 7 ... heaps of side by side tests, and THAT will make Windows 7 users aware that Linux is finally ready.

No Linux distro could match Windows XP. Ubuntu was the favourite, but it is Linux Mint 17 that defeated Windows 7 as the better operating system. Windows 10 will not add anything worthwhile to Windows 7, and yet Linux Mint 17 will continue to improve.

When people look back, it will arguably be Linux Mint 17 that will be remembered as the turning point. I challenge any Windows 7 user to dispute this ... I have used Windows 7 for years and M$ for decades. This is an historic moment in desktop operating systems, a changing of the guard.

Best operating systems

Linux Mint 17
Windows 7
Windows XP
Windows 98SE
Windows 95 (b or c)

Worst operating systems

Windows 8, 8.1
Windows Vista
Windows ME

Apple? No thanks.

Oh and, Ctrl-Alt-Del opening System Monitor is awesome :D (that should be a permanent change to the kyboard bindings).

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

I managed to get Geany looking as good as Notepad++ and Editplus. Geany is also showing to be robust, maintaining files used.

screenshot:

http://imgbox.com/ypXJM21j

Color scheme used is "Slush and Poppies".

----------

Screenshot edited with Pinta.

So ...

Notepad++ and EditPlus close alternative is Geany

Paint.NET close alternative is Pinta

:D

PS

The HTML code used for the screenshot is from Wikipedia, Linux Mint :D

Linux Mint theme used, Void.

Update regarding Pinta.

Linux Mint 17 default install Pinta version 1.3x? had a crop bug. Cropping an imaged was bugged for me.

I installed the latest nightly, 1.6x via Linux Mint, Software Manager, PPA, details:
https://launchpad.net/~pinta-maintainer ... inta-daily

All is good.

***

There is minimal culture shock using Linux Mint 17 software when using same/similar software first on Windows 7.

SAME

filezilla
firefox
pidgin
qBittorent
SMplayer (movies and music)

VERY SIMILAR

Linux Mint 17 (very easy to use from a Windows 7 background)
Pinta is very similar to Paint.NET
Geany (when set up, eg toolbar customised and color scheme set to "Slush and Poppies") is very similar to Notepad++

***

Other

BleachBIt similar to CrapCleaner
Libre Office, the best

***

Nemo (default file manager for Linux Mint 17) far better than Windows 7, Windows Explorer.
Windows 7 explorer was so bad, I used Explorer++ for years.

Linux Mint suggested improvements
- ctrl-alt-del should be key bound to System Monitor (similar to Task Manager)
- option for nightly builds with Software Manager?
- integrated firewall (security blanket haha)

Not sure what else to add, everything works wonderfully :)

Green is such an awesome color too :D

My one week anniversay of Linux Mint 17 :D

One word summary, BRILLIANT !

Going back to 2004 with the very first Ubuntu, I have been waiting to move to Linux. There was always something that prevented me and along the way I got to know mounting HDDs and Xorg more than I wish.

Fast forward a decade to earlier this year, back in April 2014 I tested Linux Mint 16. It didn't meet my needs:

NO need to use the terminal ... GUI, GUI, GUI
everything works or close enough
aura of Linux Mint being ready

Fast forward a little more to October 2014 and the Windows 10 test release ... boring !!! The GMO (Genetically Modified Operating) system from Microsoft that tries to do too much and achieves too little. I then tested Linux Mint 17 on my usb drive, permanent state and it was amazing. Not only did everything work, it looked awesome. I then tried Ubuntu and I wanted to cry, what the heck is wrong with those people! Unity sux.

Anyway, one week on and I am not looking back.

A huge thank you to all those Linux Mint 17 GUI designers who got it perfect and to all those who did all the mechanical work so that it performs as well as it looks.

The biggest issue now is nothing to do with Linux Mint, it is the related software and game potential.

There is simply too much to cite about why Linux Mint 17 is the begining of the end of Microsoft windows ... Linux Mint 17 is that point in time when Linux defeated Windows ... the snow flake has fallen and the avalanche is a rumbling.

It is essential for there to be various professional test benchmarks on youtube and the like to showcase Linux 17 against Windows 7 (SP1), the best Microsoft have to offer.

Windows 8, 8.1 has not reached the market share Vista did over the first 5 months, according to what I read online. Windows 10 will be seen as another failure ... bloated.

...

The best operating system in the world is only properly appreciated if people know about it. Hence the need for the Linux Mint people to seriously get some ads happening in the media.

Do the operating system test, Linux Mint 17 versus Windows 7 ... an open challenge to Windows users.

One month anniversary of using Linux, Linux Mint 17.

Pros (compared to Windows 7)
* noticeably faster, more responsive
* modern, over three years newer (Win 7 SP1 Feb 2011)
* faster install
* no need to update over 3 years of changes with multiple reboots
* no Internet Explorer
* nemo is more user friendly than windows explorer
* very high, excellent productivity - using same or similar software (nothing to do with Linux Mint)
* personal preference for the default color, green, mint
* open source

Cons (compared to Windows 7)
* cannot play AAA games at a similar level of performance or at all (nothing to do with Linux Mint)

Conclusion

Linux Mint 17 is the best operating system that currently exists for generic, day to day usage. It is better than Windows 7 in all areas except two, AAA games and some specialised tasks than just need Windows.

Prediction

Windows 7 is the best operating system Microsoft have, and Windows 10 will be a failure, a mix of Windows 7 and 8.0/8.1 ...trying to be too much and achieving too little. Even though it is poised to be a failure, unless Linux Mint 17 can demonstrate how good it is, with side by side everyday comparisons, it will continue to grow slowly.

Advertising, marketing, networking ... are Linux Mint's greatest weaknesses at this point in time.

Questions Windows 7 users will have include:

1. Prove to me it is better, show me on youtube, show me that I can surf the net, message, and send emails. Work with fotos.

2. What support is there for me to get started. If I am struck, do you have a help desk of sorts?

So the success of Linux Mint 17 hinges on how well the message gets out there to persons who have only ever used Windows.

...

I hope to update this at the 3 month mark. :)

...

Edit update:

Linux Mint 17 does everything Windows 7 does, except much better.*

*No AAA games.

Anyone who relied on Windows XP and then relies on Windows 7, should really check out Linux Mint 17 and see how uber it is. Linux Mint 17 really is that point in time when Linux tipped the balance from Microsoft having the best operating system.

IMO, Sublime Text > Geany. GUI tools are getting there don't forget even Windows once was nearly all terminal based and Win95 was basically a GUI over DOS.

Give it time, there are several hundred terminal apps that need GUI replacements, it took MS 10 years after DOS to achieve this with XP, unless you want to help out, then have patience.

There is a Linux clone of Notepad++ called Notepadqq. It doesn't seem to have plugins like the Windows Notepad++ though.

Did you tried the alternativeto website (which is pretty good)? Gimp is a powerful tool, so it is not a paint alternative.
I don't know but the basic search in mint works great for me.
Ubuntu and Mint are two different philosophy they do not target the same people.
This is personal taste after all.

I have been using Linux Mint for over six months now. :D

To put this into context, over the years I only ever tested Linux, finding that it never met my needs to replace Windows.

Linux Mint 17.1 and not Windows 10, is the natural advance from Windows 7.

I still have Windows 7 for games, for now.

Hey MorkMindy! Great observations.
Unfortunately, life in the computing world is mostly like life in the real world. No matter where you are, there are always advantages to being elsewhere, and also disadvantages. Windoes has an astronomical selection of software, but Linux is more robust, more reliable, and just makes more sense, especially Mint! And what I like best is that it doesn't treat you like a mind-numbed saucer-eyed incapable mindless user who can't think for himself. I just wish there were more financial incentives for Linux developers, though it's amazing what they've been able to do even without the mega-billions of M$.
I guess the biggest downside of Linux is the limited selection of easy-to-use software. But at this stage, I wouldn't give up using Linux for ANYTHING made by M$. Linux (esp. Mint) has given me peace of mind and a much less stressed life going on five years now. Not to be traded, IMHO.
Well, anyway, make the best of where you find yourself. Linuxmint is definitely a great place to find yourself! :D
PS--I love Geany and have been using it as my exclusive text editor for a couple of years. It's really powerful when you search out its capabilities.

What is so special about Notepad++ that you can't find in other text editors used in Linux distributions?
Did you try Kate, which is part of the KDE Desktop?

According to a youtube movie I saw, it can be installed using wine. Maybe you can give that a try.
