Google maps street view crashes

Post by Simon123 »

The street view in Google maps crashes to a black screen if you try to move in any direction and requires a browser reload. Anyone else experiencing this / have a fix? Running Mint 17 & Firefox with all latest updates.

Hi Simon

I can confirm the issue you mention with Google maps in firefox, I'm running Mint 17Cinn32bit fully updated, for me it appears to happen after moving a small number of times and then firefox became unresponsive with an error message about one of the scripts used by Google Maps having become unresponsive.

I use Chrome as my everyday browser and have not seen any issues with street view in Chrome.

I don't have a fix unfortunately, but, that is simply because I don't use firefox usually and it works normally in Chrome for me ( I only tested it in firefox to attempt to confirm that your issue is not unique to your system).

Hope it at least helps to know that it seems to be something more than a fault on your system.

I am also getting this issue in LM17 KDE running firefox. I had it just before I upgraded to LM17 when I updated Firefox to v30 so it could be a problem with FF v30.

Does street view use flash ?

No problems with Mint17 and FF 24 ESR.

I had it just before I upgraded to LM17 when I updated Firefox to v30 so it could be a problem with FF v30.

It's probably an FF v30 problem.

Does street view use flash ?

The FlashBlock symbol shows up for me, so probably yes.

Found this page
http://askubuntu.com/questions/486161/s ... s-to-black
with fix using
https://www.google.com/maps/preview/?force=webgl .

This works for me Mint17 & FF30.

Also chromium-browser seems to work.

I also get a crash (freeze). No black screen. Google Maps is the problem. Any action on the maps is the problem,

Linux Mint 16, 64 bit.

Actually, problem is with Chrome only. Firefox and Google Maps seems fine.

Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm still experiencing the problem as descriped by the OP. I have tried both the regular Google Maps and the "force webGL" version. Either way, when I enter streetview and try to move around, the screen turns black and Google Maps crashes.

The only thing that DID solve the problem is to switch to the old version of Google Maps, which can still be accessed here: https://www.google.com/maps?output=classic.

System info:
-Mint 16 Xfce (yes, I'm going to upgrade soon...)
-Firefox 30.0

This worked for me as I had the same issue earlier,

Mint 17, I have AMD 7640g on my laptop HP Probook 4445s

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1501

The map displays perfectly when the fglrx driver is selected.

Here is my current display info

Code: Select all

user123-HP-ProBook-4445s ~ $ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Trinity [Radeon HD 7640G]
           X.Org: 1.15.1 drivers: ati,fglrx (unloaded: fbdev,vesa,radeon) Resolution: 1366x768@60.1hz
GLX Renderer: AMD Radeon HD 7640G GLX Version: 4.3.12798 - CPC 13.35.1005

Let me know if it worked for any of you, or if you tried something else which worked better for you.

You can still access the old google maps which runs much smoother and faster via
https://www.google.co.uk/local in the uk
or https://www.google.com/local in the us

There is some difference in old and new gmaps though, specifically in the route markers. Here's a screenshot of directions for a place in the two versions:
