Solved Multi Card Reader Stopped Working

Post by oldcharlie »

Linux Mint 17.1 32 bit; AMD dual core; 2GB RAM; NVIDA PCI bridge and USB controller.
I have been using Mint 17.1 for several months and do not think the problem is associated with the operating system as it has and still is working fine. Hopefully this is the appropiate forum for this question.
Yesterday I was inserting my ScanDisk card into the Mass Storage Device (Multicard Reader) on my mint desktop and my chair rolled on me which caused me to quickly insert card (Beep) remove card (Beep) and insert card (No Beep). After this the card which normally appears as 16GB volume in file manager was not displayed. I also usually get a dialog what do you want to do as I have it set to ask what you want to do etc. I tried the SD card in my laptop and it works as usual. My USB stick still works but I'm thinking thats a different system from the multicard reader. I think I killed the multicard reader. Fortunately I had a saved output from

Code: Select all

  charlie@atlas ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:0151 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Mass Storage Device (Multicard Reader)
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Today the same command displays:

Code: Select all

 charlie@atlas ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Notice that the multicard reader is missing from this output today.

I searched the forum for similar incidents and found some SD card issues under much different circumstances and even tried the fix's without luck.

My question(s):
Is there someway to restart this process (I'm assuming it is a process – I'm still pretty green with Linux)?
Can you destroy a built in system multi card reader this easily?
This is not critical as I only use this card reader for my camera card and I can still use the USB cable. However, I am wondering what happened, why, and what can I do to fix it.
Your comments and suggestions welcome.

It's been my limited experience that most of the built-in (or added) multi media card readers are near junk on a good day. Over the years, I added 2 different readers to my desktop. One lasted about a week, the other hung in there for almost a month. I've stopped using them and instead use a usb pluggable reader. The one in use now has been used for +4 years.

Just this user's experience.

Well I must be lucky then as I'm still using my old XP machine that I bought in 2008. The original Ethernet (on mother board) dies about 2 years ago and now this. I keep telling myself it's time to get a new machine. Thanks for your input. Not getting many hits on this one. Don't know if it's because there isn't an easy answer or if it's just a dumb ass question.
Going to close it and mark it solved as it's run long enough. It really isn't a Linux problem anyway.
