[SOLVED] Midnight Commander editor missing highlight syntax

Postby sorcerer » Mon Jun 04, 2012 3:26 pm

hi,
i just installed LMDE 201204 MATE/Cinnamon 64-bit and i don't have highlight syntax in mcedit :(

i did ...

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

then i reinstalled mc

then tried to debug it against some other linux systems installed by me (debian, ubuntu, ubuntu server) where mcedit have syntax and didn't found the problem

i only need syntax highlighting in bash scripts, but it is not working in php scripts also

so, any idea what to do ?

I'm not familiar with mcedit (used gedit). A passing thought, are there plug-ins available in synaptic against the app?

never knew/installed or used any plugins with mc
usually, it just try to use some external programs if they are there or not (like tar, bzip2, gzip, etc.)
my dig took me to /usr/share/mc/syntax/ ... there are a number a files there, including sh.syntax and php.syntax
but for some reason they don't work :(

Have you tried fixing these settings through all the normal 'mc' places?

Here, pressing Ctl-s toggles syntax highlighting on and off in mcedit; whether used within mc or stand alone.

Then, within mc, the Options on the (F9) dropdown menu has an option for syntax highlighting on or off, actually I think you set it to <Auto> or individually by file type. I am fairly sure this is what sets the line in the 'ini' settings file at ~/.mc/ini that states "syntax highlighting on". See what your line states?

I use this program in EVERY install ( hundreds) that I do across all sorts of distros and in every case mc comes with syntax highlighting turned on in mcedit by default. I think you have a configuration hiccup somewhere.

cheers,
rhodry.
