[SOLVED]"ntldr missing" when trying to install LM 13 via USB

Post by atzen78 » Sat Nov 03, 2012 4:57 am

Hi,

I am a newbe to Linux and I installed LM 13 cinnamon on my lenovo thinkpad edge e135 to try it. I found it pretty nice and suiting my needs. However, since I also need Windows (dependency on a particular software for a specific purpose), I wanted to install both as dual boot.

I formated the disk via diskpart clean all. Then I installed Windows 7 pro with a bootable USB without facing a problem. Afterwards I wanted to install linux mint with another bootable USB (I created it 2 times with unetbootin under Win XP, and the .iso is from LM webpage). However, after restarting and choosing the usb as the boot device in bios, it shows the error message "ntldr is missing, press ctrl + alt + del to restart".
When searching in internet, I did not find a suitable solution, since I don't have any problem with booting windows, the bootable win 7 USB, just with the bootable LM USB. However, I tried the bootrec operations, but they did not work out.

Now I'm wondering, what the problem is. Is it me, Win 7 (although it boots without a problem), the LM 13 bootable USB, or something else?

Thanks for help!

This is nothing to do with mint, ntldr is a Windows system file. From your description the problem is with your USB disc, it probably has the Windows boot code in it's MBR.

that is a common error on some type of Mainboard if BIOS cannot find bootloader ( we are always assumed running MS product :lol: )

First check if MD5sum of your ISO file is correct.
And I am always use HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to format usb drive before using unetbootin . Windows format tool is not enough and remember using FAT32 filesystem for your Flashdrive.

@atzen78..
1. Don't use unetbootin - using this tool always end with some bugs.
2. Try to replace your ntldr with this - make copy of your file first:
http://www.multiupload.nl/37I2IAMQCJ
This is from my Win Seven ultimate x86 PL - works ok.
Put this file in your root win partition.
And as above - don't format your pendrive from windows!
Use Gparted from some linux LiveCD, and don't forget to set flags: boot and LBA on pendrive.

@mank_in..
Bios can find the bootloader, but canot readi it properly.
This is since "win seven time" - since the m$ has changed boot files standard in Windows Seven.
Sometimes there are problems with installation (boot from win CD/DVD) on some oldest mainboards.
To fix this, just "recompile" your Seven_install_DVD with bootsectors taken from Vista_DVD.

Hi and thanks a lot :)

the issue was formatting the USB. I just did it with the tool you posted, and it worked.

However, after installing LM 13 cinnamon I ran into another problem: it always boots into win7. But there is already a topic about this problem, so I'll read and try to fix it :)

Thanks again :)

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install boot-repair
Once installed, launch it from System -> Administration -> Boot Repair.
And fix/install grub on your hdd, to mbr sector.
