Installation process must ask for boot drive

Post by lsatenstein » Tue Aug 06, 2013 8:54 am

I spent a long time recovering my system after Mint15 installation. Fortunately, nothing was lost.

Here is the situation.
I have 4 disks, and /dev/sdd is the one I reserved for Mint15 KDE version.
During the installation, I selected /dev/sdd. Mint recognized it, but the installation program did not ask which boot drive I would like to use. (When all you have is one disk, the question and answer are not required).
I made the mistake of assuming that since I selected /dev/sdd, that the boot manager would be installed on /dev/sdd. ... I was wrong. It installed itself on /dev/sda, which had a grub.cfg that listed other operating systems.

Mint15 must check that if the installation is on a disk other than /dev/sda, that it ask where to place the boot-manager.

I used a recovery image to find the desired distribution on that /dev/sda and then ran grub-install /dev/sda. Now Mint 14 and Mint15 are included in my collection of Linux distributions.

Just discovered this post - I responded to your issue in this one:
Use the Panels, Luke! (not just the Whisker Menu)
XFCE and Linux Mint 19 LTS - stable, easily configurable goodness.
