Xonar DS sound much quieter than in Windows
The volume slider at the bottom right of the screen and the one in the media player are both at 100% (the media player can go over 100% but then the sound becomes distorted). Using a different media player doesn't help.

Re: Xonar DS sound much quieter than in Windows
Ancient thread, but the reason was simply that the volume was at half in alsamixer (command line program) which apparently has its own level of volume control. I lifted all bars there up to 100% and now the full range is available through the loudspeaker icon.

Same applies for the Xonar DX, which incidentally didn't work for me at all until I changed Stereo Upmixing in Alsamixer to "Front+Surround+Center/LFE".

Re: Xonar DS sound much quieter than in Windows
Hi. I have a similar issue.
I have just installed Linux Mint 16 (64bit) on my PC and my usb-sound card (Asus Xonar U7) and the sound level is very low.
I have tried to open alsamixer in Terminal, but i get the error: "cannot load mixer controls: Broken pipe"
Can somebody tell me what i am doing wrong?
How can I raise the main volume?
By '/proc/asound/version' i am getting: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k3.12.0-031200-generic.
Thanks!

Hi Driv3r,
Any luck yet? I have a xonar u7 and to fix the broken pipe error you need to add 'options snd-usb-audio ignore_ctl_error=1' to alsa-base.conf;
(or kdesudo kate if using KDE)
Then add to the options list;
Then restart system (I tried 'alsa force-reload' but that didn't work)
Then fire up alsamixer, select sound card with f6, and adjust volume. Since I'm outputting to an integrated amp I set mine to maximum (0dB) which I'm led to believe prevents bit loss.
Worth getting the thing going since the xonar u7 has excellent stats and sounds fantastic, you'd need spend serious money on an audiophile DAC to get better!
