I have just done a fresh install of Linux Mint 16 Petra, and before I do anything else, I want to get language support in place for Chinese/Pinyin.
I have followed the most recent advice I can find on doing this (http://www.monblocnotes.com/node/1917 - see bottom of post) - excerpt below
Everything went fine up to and including step 5 above. For Linux Mint 16 (Petra)
1. Menu / Control Center / Language Support
2. Install / Remove Languages...
3. check Chinese (simplified and / or traditional) and click on Apply Changes. Required data download and installation is started.
4. using package manager, install ibus, ibus-m17n and ibus-pinyin package (this will install several dependancies)
5. restart Language Support, and select ibus for keyboard input method system.
6. in Control Center, a new icon named Keyboard Input Methods appeared. Click on it. You will be asked whether you want IBus Daemon to be started. Accept.
7. in IBus Preferences window, General tab, I was not able to configure my usual keyboard shortcuts Frown.
8. in Input Method tab, add Chinese - pinyin and Chinese - hanyu pinyin (m17n) methods. Add input method for your language as well.
9. restart your session
Step 6 mentions a new icon in the Control Center, but there is none. I did a reboot, and still no icon.
I checked that the ibus daemon is running (by running 'ibus-daemon' from terminal), and I get a message stating that it is.
I tried restarting ibus (by running 'ibus restart' from terminal), and a very brief flash of something appears in the Control Center (presumibly the new aforementioned icon?) but then instantly disappears again.
I can go no further now. Can anyone offer any further advice?? Gratefully received.
