Advice on Upgrading from Ubuntu 13.10 to Mint

Post by Kendoori »

I am running Ubuntu with Cinnamon but have some wonky issues and am strategizing about somehow cleaning this up and shifting over to Mint. On Ubuntu I have a separate encrypted /home partition and it's rather large (300GB used). I've read the recommended Mint upgrade instructions with the Mint Backup tool (which I've installed into Ubuntu), but many comments on this post : complain about the tool not working properly.

I do have a separate external drive that I can use as part of the process and was considering rsyncing my home folder to the external drive, with the idea restoring after installing Mint, but am not sure regrading the management process of restoring my apps. The data portion is obvious.

What's the best way to do this that will be the most reliable?

P.S. I may wait to do this until Qiana

First, here is Clem's guide:
How to upgrade to a newer release

I can't offer you any wisdom on the encrypted /home - except to make sure you have a backup of everything.

But, regarding the software backup - I would copy all of the .deb files in /var/cache/apt/archives in Ubuntu to the /var/cache/apt/archives folder in your new Mint installation. That would save on download time.
To "automate" your software installation in Mint, run Synaptic in Ubuntu and follow this tutorial. ... r_computer
