Can't get out of sleep mode SOLVED

Post by norm.h » Sat May 31, 2014 2:09 pm

Running Linux Mint 13 (Mate) 32 bit.

For some time, I've had intermittent boot and shutdown hangs, which seemed to be overcome by adding "nomodeset" to grub, but since yesterday I only get the mbd splash, and then nothing but a blank screen, no login, nada.

I originally suspected a defective graphics chip, so in desperation connected laptop to an external monitor.
This got me to the login page, which I did successfully, but imediately after logging in got a message "entering sleep mode", and screen went blank.
In sleep mode the "computer on" indicator light should have been flashing, but it was steady.

Pressing Fn/F4 got the indicator light flashing and the power button light went out.
Pressing the power button again woke the laptop up, but imediately got the message "entering sleep mode", and screen went blank.

I'm now wondering if the laptop's screen is faulty, but until I can get out of sleep mode, I can do nothing.
Any suggestions will be most welcome.

at boot up press

Code: Select all

CTRL ALT F1
type in your username then password then use this

Code: Select all

sudo mate-screensaver-preferences
than check under power management if the settings have put your computer to sleep prematurely.

you can use CTRL ALT F7 to exit the tty1.

EDIT:

You can also use this link to find errors in logs.
http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2011/08/lin ... log-files/

/var/log/messages should be the file that you should check first.

Code: Select all

gksu pluma /var/log/messages

Thanks for your advice, but this is really weird.......

Powered up connected to external monitor, and the mbd splash came up on both screens, followed by login screen.
Did CNRTL/ALT/F1, entered username & password, then "sudo mate-screensaver-preferences" at which point I got the message: "(mate-screensaver-preferences:1549) : GTK-warning:cannot open display"

Powered off, powered on, got to login screen, logged in OK.
Got to Power Options via Control Panel in Main Menu, nothing set which could cause early entry to sleep mode.
Went into Firefox, all normal.
Disconnected external monitor, still OK. Shut down normally.

Powered up - blank screen. Powered off.
Powered up again doing CNRTL/ALT/F1, and the login text appeared so briefly, I didn't have time to enter anything, followed by blank screen.
Tried again - same result.

Because things seemed to be going OK, I didn't look at any log files - maybe I should have done!
Will go back to the external monitor and try again.
Any thoughts on what happened will be welcome.

Latest update:

Reconnected to external screen - powered up & got mbd splash on both screens, but login page on ext. screen only.
Logged in succesfully.
There isn't a /var/log/messages - why?
FWIW this is today's activity taken from /var/log/auth.log, I really do hope it means something to someone!

Up to 16:14:24 I was not connected to the external screen. (It's my last try detailed in the previous post)
From 18:58:07 I was connected to the external screen.

I've just downloaded MInt 17 - if I could get a screen I'd instal it. Could it be done using the external screen????

cannot determine display-device
Thats seems to be your major problem. Searching the net revealed this to be bug affecting some users.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1019108

this seems to an answer to solve it though it's beyond my limited knowledge:

On a debian system this means that instead of including pam config "common-session" you'll have to include "common-session-noninteractive" where pam_ck_connector is not getting loaded at all.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49160
And yes you can install linux with an external monitor, you can even install using only terminal!

I would try using mint 17 live dvd/usb first and see if problem remains,I suspect this bug won't you affect you using since mint 17 is very different than mint 13.

Thanks again.
I had noticed "cannot determine display-device" and wondered about its significance.
The suggested remedy for the bug is beyond me too, so I'll take your advice and try Mint 17 as you suggest.

Well upgrading to Mint 17 wasn't the solution.

After doing a clean install followed by configuring my setup, all was OK for several hours while my wife played games on Facebook, then for no apparent reason it crashed as I atttempted to change the clock format. A reboot only produced a blank screen.

This morning, I reconnected to the external screen and booted up OK.
Still no /var/log/messages so in desperation I changed pam config "common-session" to "common-session-noninteractive" as suggested above, disconnected the ext. screen and rebooted successfully.

It remains to be seen if this actually is the solution.

3 or 4 successful boots since my last post, so I'll mark this issue as solved.
If there are any more problems, I'll start a new thread because I think this thread title is now misleading.
