Chromium and Chrome keep crashing

Post by Elysium » Mon Aug 11, 2014 8:43 am

I am really disappointed in the browsers in LM17.

They only give me a headache ever since I changed.

Google maps didnt work....now that the accelaration is turned off, it works....but for some reason my browsers keep crashing. Only google browsers. Firefox seem to work just fine.

Any ideas how to fix and bring back the old glory of Chrome and Chromium?

UPDATE: I get this error message when I open chrome through the terminal
"ATTENTION: default value of option force_s3tc_enable overridden by environment.

First of all, please read the forum rules and especially rule #5 under section II.

That being said, can you run both webbrowser in a terminal. Any messages that appear please copy and paste them here.

Ok. Sorry.

Well, here is the message I get:

"ATTENTION: default value of option force_s3tc_enable overridden by environment.

It doesnt crash anymore though.

Nah.....this error message is recent from the terminal. The only difference is that it doesnt crash anymore. Something is still not okay with it though.

Hey Nomko. Actually it still crashes when I open html files (I use .html files to create websites and I double check changes in google chrome).

So, I opened chrome in the terminal and opened one of these htmls files and waited till it crashed. This is the message I was given:
"ATTENTION: default value of option force_s3tc_enable overridden by environment.
[20457:20457:0813/142642:ERROR:sandbox_linux.cc(302)] InitializeSandbox() called with multiple threads in process gpu-process
[20422:20422:0813/142642:ERROR:desktop_window_tree_host_x11.cc(1330)] Not implemented reached in void views::DesktopWindowTreeHostX11::MapWindow(ui::WindowShowState)
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
what(): vector::_M_range_check
Aborted"

For some reason it gets aborted and chrome gets shut down when opening html files.
Any ideas why?

you are running this in a VM (sandbox) so make sure hardware acceleration is enabled for it,
People disagree with me. I just ignore them.

In a virtual machine? It is my LM 17 Mate Os that it runs on.
And Hardware acceleration is disabled because google maps is just a black page with it on. :(

With the last couple new versions of Chrome, Google Maps always crashes to a black page for me, also. I don't worry about it, I just use Mapquest or Yahoo Maps. I don't think it is a problem with my hardware, I think it is a Google/Chrome problem, and they will get it sorted out eventually.
I have no problem opening my html files, tho.
If you are looking for an alternate - the Seamonkey suite includes a good browser and an amazingly good WYSIWYG html composer.

I have never used mapquest, nor yahoo maps. I am pretty happy with google maps....but I might look into those.

Regarding seamonkey: I already use geany for html editting. It is opening a html file that makes google chrome crash which is extremely weird, because it is a standard thing (opening a html file).

Thanks for the advise though.

Are you using the most recent version of Chrome? - Version 36.0.1985.143

Please try this:
In Chrome, right-click on this page > Save As > html file on Desktop
Then right-click on the file on your desktop and see if it opens OK in Chrome.

Or create a html page with LibreOffice.

I am thinking that maybe you have geany set up to create a variation of html that is not compatible with Chrome. Is that possible?

This is the error message I used to get:
"ATTENTION: default value of option force_s3tc_enable overridden by environment.

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
what(): vector::_M_range_check

Funny enough...it has stopped crashing again. This doesnt make sense at all.

Oh and thanks for trying to help me. I really appreciate it.

chrome and chromium use sandbox (kind of a virtual environment to run separate instances)

check and follow this bug tracker but my guess is has to do with drivers especially graphic card drivers and the hardware acceleration feature.
