InProComm IPN 2220 wifi not working under Mint 17

Post by EvilSupahFly » Mon Sep 22, 2014 1:21 pm

On an old Acer Aspire 1410 I refurbished, the built-in WIFI doesn't work. It's IPN 2220.

lspci output:

Code: Select all

02:04.0 Ethernet controller: InProComm Inc. IPN 2220 802.11g
uname:

Code: Select all

Linux Aspire-1410 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:31:42 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
The built-in is a combo 802.11g/bluetooth adapter which works fine under Windows XP, and I would prefer to keep it native, if possible, but I'm not above using NDIS Wrapper if a native solution can't be found.
If I had a signature, this is where I'd stick it.

Hi ,
does it actually show up?

Code: Select all

iwconfig
People disagree with me. I just ignore them.

No, it doesn't.

Code: Select all

seann@Aspire-1410 ~ $ iwconfig

eth2 no wireless extensions.

          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off

I don't know if it will help, but I ran your wireless script on this machine too. Results at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/8404833/

ok on this one we will have to use ndiswrapper and the windows xp drivers
so open synaptic and install
ndisgtk (graphical tool)
ndiswrapper-common
ndiswrapper-utils
mintwifi (let's see if a driver is in there)

So far so good, with two minor caveats (used apt-get because Synaptic takes a century to load on this dinosaur):

Code: Select all

Package ndiswrapper-utils is not available, but is referred to by another package.
mintwifi is already the newest version.
Otherwise, we're good. I assume, since I made this dual-boot, I can load the drivers right from the XP side?

Still having issues under Mint. I booted into Windows, and tested. Under XP, I can authenticate and connect to my WIFI on the IPN card, though in Windows, it doesn't come up IPN (and I forgot to note what it said). However, before I installed NDISWRAPPER, Mint couldn't see or use the built-in. After installing NDISW, and the Windows drivers, Mint can see the built-in IPN adapter, but it won't authenticate. It asks for the WIFI password, and I enter it, but it rejects. Could it be it just doesn't like WPA2 for some reason? That seems odd to me since I can use it fine under Windows XP. I will uninstall the driver you kindly provided, and pull the driver information from XP's Device Manager, and use the one right from Windows' INF directory and see what happens. For now, I have the D-Link PCMCIA adapter which I'm borrowing so I can troubleshoot Mint and have online access.
