Firefox causing Mint 17 to freeze

Post by funinthesun » Sat Jan 31, 2015 1:30 am

Once I started using Mint 17 I started to experience periodic freezes where i had to hard restart the machine. Updating to 17.1 did not fix it. I then noticed that freezing only occurred when Firefox was open. I stopped using Firefox and started using Chromium and the freeze problem stopped. However, now that I am using Chromium I get a Snap error that blows up the browser tab whenever i try to view a video. So, I'm back to using Firefox and will deal with the freezeups when they happen. Any ideas why My machine is freezing? It is a new Acer Aspire ES1-512-c88m with 4Gb memory. Is this a known issue? Will it be fixed eventually with Firefox upgrades? I tried to follow the Chromium error checking but couldn't really sort out the issue. It seems that Flash does not work right in Chromium.

Hello, funinthesun.
Once I started using Mint 17 I started to experience periodic freezes where i had to hard restart the machine. Updating to 17.1 did not fix it.
Have you checked the logfiles
  • ~/.xsession-errors
  • /var/log/syslog
  • /var/log/syslog.1 (previous syslog)
  • /var/log/Xorg.0.log
  • /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old (previous Xorg.0.log)
for error messages which were logged around the time that the freezes occured? More likely than not such freezes will be related to the video drive software in use. (Of course, it may be something else.)
About hard resetting:
Have you tried pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> instead? Provided it really is the GUI only which freezes then pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> will terminate it and take you back to the MDM login screen.
Provided this works, resetting the GUI is better than hard resetting the whole machine, in particular because no filesystem corruption will occur. Hard resetting will cause filesystem inconsistencies sooner or later.
<Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> will not be a solution, but a temporary workaround.

In order to troubleshoot such freezes we should get a concise overview of your system specifications. Please, post the screen output of the terminal command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(capital F, lowercase x, lowercase z)

Cheers,
Karl

I don't know what it means or what is causing it. I have attached the machine status file like you asked. If you need to see a different log file or for some reason you want to see a longer portion of this syslog file let me know.
I got a whole series of these kinds of things leading up to the end.

If it means anything, about two times out of three when I try to shut down the machine it will freeze on the blue gear icon and won't shut down like normal. I have to press the on switch to get it to shut off.

Re: Firefox causing Mint 17 to freeze

Post by karlchen » Tue Feb 10, 2015 7:46 am

Hello, funinthesun.

Please, be assured that I do not understand most of what the logfiles tell, either.
Yet, I spotted several lines complaining about CPU #1, #2, #3 like this: "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 22s!" where the number of the CPU changed. I assume there will be a complaint about CPU #0 somewhere, too, only it is not present in the posted part.
So I googled for "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 22s!"

Found this Ubuntu thread: kernel BUG: soft lockup - CPU stuck for 23s!
In that case, the power supply of the machine did not work reliably thus causing the lockups.
This need not be true in your case, too, but worth checking.

The other thing which I found was this Launchpad bug report: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 22s! [systemd-udevd:546]
In that case, the trouble started with the kernel series 3.13.0-xx.
Note: you are using K3.13.0-24, which is an (old) member of this kernel series, too.

It is imaginable that you are affected by the same bug as the creator of that Launchpad bug report.
Therefore it is worth a try and allow Update Manager to update K3.13.0-24 to the latest available update K3.13.0-45.
I cannot give any warranty that the reported bug has been fixed in the meantime in the K3.13.0-xx series. But it is worth a try.

In case K3.13.0-45 does not yield any improvement, you might use Update Manager and switch to a more recent kernel series like e.g. 3.16.0-xx.
Doing so is not irrevertible unless you remove the previous kernels from your disk. As long as you keep them on your disk, it will be possible to return to an older kernel at boot time with the help of the Grub boot menu. (In case using a more recent kernel makes thing worse.)

HTH,
Karl

<moderator on>
funinthesun's post split off and turned into a separate thread here: Mint 18.2 KDE never shuts down properly and freezes frequently
