I just installed Linux Mint 17.1 and everything works great except there is now a slow (5 sec) screen-clearing effect from bottom to top on both the BIOS splash screen as well as the Grub menu.
More details: after power-on the "Lenovo" spash screen appears, then blinks out and back on then gets wiped nice and smooth but it takes like five seconds. Then the Grub menu appears and after I make my selection, again the screen is wiped from bottom to top slowly.
Any ideas on how I can disable/fix/avoid these ten seconds of screen clearing?

Re: Grub menu has a slow wipe effect on boot
Because BIOS splash is affected, it looks like a hardware problem that can't be solved with "sudo update-grub", changing drivers or updating/upgrading kerneIs. So, discard things before send it to techs for repairing: check video connections plugging and unplugging externals monitors (maybe it a bad contact or a soldering is bad), use another adapter (a damage power source may case this problems). Other checking (display, graphic card, RAM or CPU) are not recommended for all user.

In addition to JOPETA's useful advice:
You might try the easy generic solutions: install the latest kernel from the 3.13 series:

(item 3, right column)
Then reboot.
When no improvement: install the latest kernel from the 3.16 series. Then reboot.
When still no improvement: check for a newer BIOS / UEFI and when available, install it.

Related to EUFI/BIOS and only to be exhaustive, also check video setting (don't now if there is some special function or can decrease reserved video memory) but can disable backlit kayboard, Adaptive Brightness in power settings or Display Power Saving Technology in Intel HD Graphics dialogue.
If you have Windows already installed and the same things happen when booting...it is hardware or BIOS problem. Try Lenovo customer forum if any.
