WINE doesn't find mount manager [SOLVED]

Post by Jerry N » Fri Jun 19, 2015 2:41 pm

I am using Mint 17 Mate.
To solve problems with WINE 1.6.2, I completely flushed WINE and all of its bits and pieces (I think).
I have re-installed WINE but cannot get it to install my programs (Word 2003, Family Tree Maker).
In "Wine Configuration" under the "Drives" tab I get the message
"Failed to connect to the mount manager,
the drive configuration cannot be edited".
WINE does run two games from Windows XP, Spider and Freecell.

On my secondary computer with a nearly identical setup, WINE works just fine and the "Drives"
tab has all its normal functions.

I am running Word 2003 and Family Tree Maker in a virtual box so this WINE problem is more of an annoyance that a show stopper.
I use Word 2003 because LibreOffice Writer completely destroys the carefully crafted formatting in some family history books I am working on.

Any clues? I could re-install Mint 17 (or 17.2?) from scratch if necessary.

"flushed" meaning "purged"?

Usually the most important thing to remove is your wine "prefix", which is usually (by default)
/home/yourusername/.wine

Like
rm -r ~/.wine
or
mv ~/.wine ~/.wine.old

The next time you run wine it'll create a new .wine directory, tho it's a good idea to create a clean one; if you're running a 32 bit wine system (for 32bit windows programs), check these:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/177192/h ... ine-prefix
http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#32_bit_wineprefix
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?
Mint 18.3 Xfce/fluxbox/pulse-less
Xubuntu 17.10/fluxbox/pulse-less

I did the whole purging routine again and still found a bunch of WINE related programs when I searched for WINE in the Software Manager.
I searched through the directory trees to make sure all WINE related stuff was gone.
(Some times Caja is a lot more help than the terminal in doing this stuff) I know - heresy  .
Just for the fun it I also rebooted the computer.
WINE does appear to working now, at least I was able to install Family Tree Maker.

Thanks for the boost!

Jerry
