Cannot boot Mint 17.2 on Acer Aspire ES1-311

Post by HyperQube » Wed Aug 05, 2015 2:30 pm

I just bought an Acer Aspire ES1-311 with Windows 8 on it. I deleted Windows and installed Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon. Booting from USB and installation went flawlessly. Then I pulled the USB stick out, waiting to boot from the HDD (after a restart). Surprise, NO BOOTABLE DEVICE.
So I went into my Boot Menu and turned Secure Boot off (Disabled) while still in UEFI mode. Same result, does not see the HDD.
I changed UEFI to Legacy boot, same problem, No Bootable Device.

Windows was working on it , so the HDD works perfectly...I just got this laptop a few hours ago :(

Any ideas? :(

Check the UEFI settings for the position of the Windows Boot Manager:

If that doesn't help, re-install Grub for UEFI:

Funny enough, if I have UEFI enabled, I don't see that list. If I have Legacy Boot enabled, I see the list but not Windows Boot Manager.

I tried the tutorial for reinstalling grubs. The steps worked without error but it does the same thing... It will not boot from HDD.

EDIT: In BIOS I have an option under Main -> D2D Recovery . The description says: "To do Acer disc-to-disc system recovery via Alt + F10 key during POST"

I enabled D2D Recovery and pressed Alt + F10 on boot. It says "Booting in insecure mode" and boots Ubuntu from the HDD. Does anyone know how to completely deactivate this security garbage , so I don't have to press anything during boot?

Also , I have SecureBoot disabled, BUT : under Security tab (also in BIOS ) there are some options down :

Secure Boot Mode : Standard
Erase all secure boot setting :
Select and UEFI file as trusted for executing
Restore Secure Boot to Factory Default.

But all these are black and I cannot touch them or modify them.

EDIT 2 : SOLVED

Step 1 : Press F2 to enter BIOS settings.
Step 2 : ENABLE SecureBoot
Step 3 : From the Security Tab select "Select an UEFI file as trusted for executing" and then select ubuntu.grub
Step 4 : DISABLE SecureBoot
Step 5 : Reboot and enjoy.

Works perfectly. :D

Thank you! I just got a second hand Aspire ES1-311 and was struggling with the other online methods of getting it to boot mint and this one worked (with mint 19). So thanks again!
