Re: Power Management during video playback [Solved]

Post by abtygwyn »

I am having a few issues with power management. When watching films on VLC player the screen keeps switching off and the video completely stops. It needs a move of the cursor to bring it back to life.

I've checked the obvious things in power management so when on AC power everything is set to 'NEVER'
I've also looked at screensaver and I think the settings are all correct.

Are there any other settings I'm missing which might affect the powering off during video playback. The kids are really complaining at me so any help would be much appreciated. :) Thanks

xset manages a screen saver, standby and suspend that run in parallel with others. To see current settings enter in a terminal:
xset q
To turn off the screen saver enter:
xset s off
To turn off dpms enter:
xset -dpms

Thanks. Will do as suggest and post a reply once I've been successful.

One other thing. When configuring the dpms is this a permanent thing or will I need to configure it each time I start the system up again?

Thanks

It needs to be reset on each boot. I created a script with the following code and added it to startup applications.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
xset s off
xset -dpms

At Cinnamon, KDE and MATE this helps (Alt+F2):

Code: Select all

gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Note: Replace gedit with the appropriate editor (MATE: gksu pluma /etc/X11/xorg.conf or KDE: kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf)

Insert code and save:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier	"ServerLayout0"
	Option	"BlankTime"	"0"
	Option	"StandbyTime"	"0"
	Option	"SuspendTime"	"0"
	Option	"OffTime"	"0"
EndSection
Reboot computer

Thanks. Did this and it works so all's well. As yet the problem has not reoccurred but it will be tested soon enough during the next video and I'll know then.

Thanks again
