Removed network-manager and now can't log into GUI [Solved]

Post by Alejo84 » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:32 am

Hello everybody. First of all I'd like to say I'm relatively new to Linux.

My wireless connection was dropping at random times, and the network manager kept asking me to connect again - password is saved so I don't understand why it wouldn't reconnect automatically, instead I must be there to press the connect button, making overnight torrenting impossible.

Anyway, I started searching online for a solution to this problem and ran into this tutorial: http://www.ihaveapc.com/2010/07/how-to- ... inux-mint/

Following the instructions I managed to get in an even deeper problem. I installed wicd, removed network-manager, rebooted and now I can't even login to my user.

Video I made demonstrating the issue: https://youtu.be/CtdW-xYO9vc

Model is ASUS UL30VT.
Distro is Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela 64x.
I'm in console because I cannot log into the GUI. Right now posting from tablet.

Thanks in advance.

Xserver is crashing or not installed. Depending on your desktop environment, re-install it via recovery mode´s root prompt.

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /
apt-get --reinstall install cinnamon
### or if mate
apt-get --reinstall install mate-desktop mate-desktop-common
sync
reboot

This is what I'm getting:

I guess that means I have no connection, right?
I've tried connecting with wlan and Ethernet cable but couldn't get anything to work, any suggestions?

When you have an ethernet cable, do the next commands in the root prompt

Code: Select all

nmcli dev
.. tells available connections. If eth0 , run

Code: Select all

ifconfig eth0 up

The program 'nmcli' is currentlh not installed. You can install it by typing: apt-get install network-manager
Can't install network-manager because, of course, no connection. Ethernet cable is plugged in by the way.

Also been trying other suggestions, still can't connect:

Well, I finally fixed it!

Not sure how I did it, but once I managed to get the connection working then I ran all the commands you gave me, reinstalled cinnamon and I'm now posting from my laptop again. So relieved I didn't have to reinstall the whole thing.

Thank you so much for your help.

Thank you in the end it worked great. I was struggling with the last step for a while, because even though I had internet (on cable) the port was not recognised. For those who encounter similar issue , for me this worked like a charm:
1) open interface file
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
2) add below text
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

3) restart networking
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
