What is using the network connection?

Post by asquartz »

Hello all,

I am using Mint 17.2 (Mate) on a Dell latitude laptop.

With no programs running on the desktop, system monitor shows approx 2KB/s and 500B/s download and upload respectively, more-or-less continuously.

Neither system monitor nor "top" it seems will show me which programs are using the network connection. Is there a command or program I can use to see what is causing this background data usage?

Thanks,

Andy

You can install nethogs and run it from the terminal to see that. iftop may also be useful. nethogs shows upload/download bandwidth grouped by process. iftop shows the same but by destination (doesn't list the process).

Thanks for the quick reply Xenopeek.

The 2KB/s transfer doesn't seem to be happening at the moment, but I've downloaded and run nethogs and it looks like it will be able to reveal the culprit next time it happens.

Much appreciated,

Andy.
