Mint 17.2 No Tablet Detected (wacom) [Kernel 3.19 issue]

Post by Olson »

Edit So I rebooted back in to the older 3.16 kernel and the GUI became available again, so I'm wondering now if I can get this working with 3.19 because I'm using it for additional support for xbox one controller.

Hello.. I didn't notice until today but for whatever reason when I go to preferences -> graphics tablet, the UI there is saying "No Tablet Detected" Please plug in or turn on your graphics tablet.

Well that's strange, because it's plugged in and turned on and working, just I cannot configure it using the GUI to map to individual monitor or switch left / right handed etc.

I ran some commands:

Code: Select all

ols@boxen ~ $ lsmod | grep wacom
wacom 81920 0
hid 110592 3 wacom,hid_generic,usbhid

I have also tried pulling out the other devices webcam.. xbone controller. , I have tried reinstalling the xserver-xorg-input-wacom package.. I've tried rebooting.. I didn't really know what else to check or where to turn, any advice would be greatly appreciated - I know I could use xsetwacomset or so but I'm not expert on commandline things, I did enjoy having the GUI.

All the best \o

Edit I suppose the only thing I did do, was update the Kernel from the repository to 3.19, whether this could have caused it I dont know but I wanted a later kernel for the added xbox one controller support because my brother gave me one and when he visits I have some games we can play.

I suppose I can test this by booting to the old kernel.

I have the 3.16.0-50 Kernel and my Intuos4 M tablet is correctly identified. Since 17.2 is based on the 3.16 kernel, I would consider trying to stay on that revision... although 17.3 is not too far off.

3.16 does not offer kernel support for the Xbox One controller, so far as I'm concerned downgrading again isn't an option. I dont see why the GUI tool shouldn't just work with the newer kernel anyway. The tablet works fine, it's just the GUI tool. xsetwacom in terminal works and I remapped the tablet to specific monitor just using that like the old days.. of course it's not as convenient as one would choose.

To Clarify.. I'm not moaning that the tablet doesn't work.. it does. I'm saying that the GUI tool in system settings, Graphics Tablet says "No tablet detected" when the tablet works fine and I can configure it using the terminal xsetwacom tool.

I'm saying the GUI tool broke because I chose to upgrade the kernel. I dont think it should do that.

Same issue, wacom tablet works but the settings GUI won't detect it since Mint 17.3 or the fact it comes with new kernel 3.19.

I'm having same problem with my wacom Intuos 4 and Cintiq 13hd with it not being detected in the system preference using kernel version 3.19 whether I upgraded it from mint 17.2 or if I installed 17.3. I want to use kernel 3.19 because my killer 1525 wifi card in my msi gt72 2qe laptop works but the wacom do not. The intuos works ok but my cintiq13hd does not calibrate correctly with kernel 3.19. Now I ditched mint until it's fixed so now I'm using ubuntu15.10 with kernel 4.2 and it works. For some reason I tried updating mint's kernel to 4.2 and everything broke. I'm waiting for a fix before I switched back to mint.

It looks like there will be a certain amount of DIY involved if we want to use a Wacom tablet with any Kernel beyond 3.16. Here is a link to the Linux Wacom Project... http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/wiki/ ... /Main_Page

Start by having a look at the FAQ for supported devices. While my Intuos4 is supported in the 3.16 Kernel, 3.17 and onwards do not support it without drivers. It appears to be related to how the USB HID driver was written from that point onwards.

Just wanted to inform that upgrading to 4.2.0 didn't fix it for me.

I am reaching out to a member of a Ubuntu forum who gave partial instructions a few years ago about compiling a wacom.ko file in the hope that he is still active on that forum. I will report back with any information I receive.

My Intuos4 is shown when I do a lsusb. The OLED images are loaded when I login, so it is recognised somehow. But there is no response to pen moves or button clicks.

Where did you find the information that an Intuos4 is not supported in kernel 3.17 and onwards? I can't find it on the linuxwacom site. For the Intuos 4 (6x9) it only shows kernel version 2.6.31 as a minimum.

Can you specify the "certain amount of DIY", or point me to a description? As far as I can tell the linuxwacom site doesn't show me how to configure my Intuos4 with kernel 3.19.

I am still working on finding concrete information. I came across a reference in a muddled search late last night that suggested that the way USB HID codes for the Wacom tablets were recognised was changed in Kernel 3.17. A few folks were having some success editing GRUB but since we now use GRUB2 our situation is different. Most of the guides are very, very old.

Sadly the person at the Ubuntu forum I found this morning was last active two years ago so I cannot message him about the issue. I suspect we will have to compile a wacom.ko and a couple of other things. I also noticed that 3.19 dropped my Roland QuadCapture sound card too.

For the time being I am still running on 3.16 as it all works fine while I search forums.

I have to admit defeat here - I just don't know enough to understand our next steps to get the Wacom working under the 3.19 kernel. I will have to hand this over to the Mint devs to see if they can help.

What I find odd is that a perfectly working system has been killed. Question is why.
And if the change took place in kernel 3.17, that is over a year old. So why hasn't this been fixed?

I just tried the instructions in Wacom/LatestDriver, and install version 0.31 of input-wacom from the PPA over version 0.23 from the Mint repositories.
That does not solve the problem.

Any other ideas (besides going back to an older kernel)?

I also tried what gwi did. I even tried to compile the driver from source and it did not work for me. I reverted the install after it made my desktop somewhat invisible and messed up. Anything past 3.1.6 doesn't work for me. I use an intuos3 9x12 and what gwi describes is exactly what I'm experiencing as well, tablet still works but is not detected in mint tablet settings.

I just installed 17.3 from scratch. The tablet is now working.

There are two problems:
1. Since I am lefthanded I changed the orientation. I can't do that now, since the settings applet still doesn't work. I resored my home directory, but apparently the settings are stored elsewhere. Does anybody now where?

2. I am using the intuos4-config script to set the OLED displays, but since 17.3 this causes a freeze of the tablet. Does anybody now why?

Thanks to someone at the linuxwacom discussion list I have the settings applet working. Here are the explanation and instructions:

It looks like the installed version of libwacom (0.8) ignores tablets
which are connected on the HID bus (which is where Wacom tablets are
connected starting with Linux 3.17). Upgrading to libwacom 0.10 or
later should fix the issue. Although Mint doesn't seem to offer a
"vivid" version of this package like it does for the X driver, I've
had luck just using the upstream Ubuntu packages. Download the DEB
packages available at the links below and install them with

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i libwacom2_0.11+dfsg-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb libwacom-common_0.11+dfsg-0ubuntu1_all.deb
The panel should start working after a restart (or maybe just a logout/login).

libwacom2
libwacom-common

Maybe this will help others like it did help me.

George

Thank you so much! It even works when I switch to kernel 4.2.0-22 while using Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 64bit! I'm so happy that you found a solution!
Also if it helps anyone, I did not do a fresh install. Just installed the packages that gwi gave after the kernel and system upgrade.

I was having the same issue but thanks to gwi's post I've now also got the settings applet working. I'd just bought a new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 on auction from a for sale site on the net. I was eager to use it with the latest version of Mint but was then getting these problems. Loving Mint.
