VLC failure play DVD (Solved)

Post by Octavian » Thu Oct 29, 2015 1:10 pm

I recently switched to a new computer because my other one was about to be 6 years old and I decided on fixing my windows to a Linux mint. All went well until I started having trouble playing DVD's. Before I switched the OS DVD's played just fine in Windows. I am trying to get VLC to play a DVD with no success. I read through different forum posts to try and find a fix only the fixes don't work because the packages cannot be found. Here is the output of errors;

Output from VLC

Code: Select all

Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc "/dev/sr0".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvdsimple:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.
Output in Terminal running VLC

Code: Select all

littlepebble@littlepebble-HP-250-G2-Notebook-PC ~ $ vlc

I attempted to fix it with the suggested stuff but could not install any of them.

Code: Select all

dpkg-query: no packages found matching libdvdcss
Edit; I figured out where your were going with this and then figured out what was missing. libdvdcss was updated to libdvdcss2 or it seems that way. I read through this thread and found a command that fixed it and reading through its output saw that it installed libdvdcss2 which I thought was installed but I guess it was not configured right. Either that or it was not installed at all. Anyway the answer was on this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2057776

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
