Can I use Bitlocker on Linux?

Post by darjeeling »

Hi all,

I have two question regarding Encryption Software. As besides Mint I am frequently using Windows, I am making use of Bitlocker encryption software. I know that there are some of you would say, better not use this program as it is offered by Microsoft. However, it is working quiet fast and out of the box. I think it is specially handy for on-the-fly encryption for USB sticks.

For now I really cannot find a good alternative for Linux, so my questions:

1- is there an encryption program for Linux similar working like Bitlocker (or Filevault from Apple)?

2- is there a Linux program which can read files encrypted by Bitlocker?

I really would be glad for any comment or help!

Thanks !!!

Did you even try Google? First two hits when searching for "bitlocker linux":

In short you can read bitlocker encrypted partitions on Linux.

The alternative on Linux was available during installation of Linux Mint, where you had the choice to optionally encrypt the entire disk. Full disk encryption on Linux uses dm-crypt + LUKS. What those are you can find on Wikipedia. You can't easily encrypt your root partition after already having installed Linux Mint. You can encrypt additional partitions later with cryptsetup command (the front-end for dm-crypt).
