Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com

Post by powerhouse » Sun Jan 03, 2016 9:56 am

When running apt-get update I get the following response:

Code: Select all

...
W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://extra.linuxmint.com rosa Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 3EE67F3D0FF405B2 Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint Package Repository v1) <root@linuxmint.com>

W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/rosa/Release

W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Is there a problem with http://extra.linuxmint.com or with the signature?

I had the same issue with packages.linuxmint.com and changed to a different mirror - following that the problem was gone.

However, I can't find a replacement for extra.linuxmint.com.

Any idea?

There isn't that much in extra repo: http://extra.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=Rosa. It isn't mirrored, just like the Canonical partner repository isn't. Contains non-free software.

I don't know what could be causing the signature error.

Thanks for the reply. It works on and off. Now it works, but I get these errors:

You're the third person I know of that has had problems like this. We'd like to investigate this from our end and need some input from you to do that. Besides an analysis of the route, this will include some personal information. Namely your IP address as we need to confirm your IP address hasn't been banned for some overzealous reason. As such I request you PM me the information and I will only share this information with Clem (Linux Mint founder and project lead) for checking the server ban list.

Please run these two commands on the terminal and copy the output to me in a PM (see the PM button to the right of this post).

Code: Select all

wget -qO- http://ipecho.net/plain; echo
mtr -4 -b -c 1 -w 68.235.39.11
The first command just prints your public IP address. The second command analyzes the route to the server. With this information we can investigate if there is a problem on our end.

Software Update Error

Post by PhillipMwaniki » Fri Jan 15, 2016 5:01 am

I am using Linux Mint 17.3. My update manager of late has been bringing up errors about hash mismatch exception and that it cannot access the updates server. My internet connection is good (10mbps) so that cannot be an issue. The error is:

W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://extra.linuxmint.com rosa Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 3EE67F3D0FF405B2 Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint Package Repository v1)

W: GPG error: http://packages.linuxmint.com rosa Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 3EE67F3D0FF405B2 Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint Package Repository v1) W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/rosa/Release

W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty/Release Unable to find expected entry 'restricted/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)

W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Help will be great.

Searching for this "BADSIG 3EE67F3D0FF405B2" error, I find topics as far back as 6 years ago. It therefor seems to be unrelated to the problems some few people are having with not being able to connect to the server itself from around end of December. It sounds like you have a corrupted package cache and should clean it. Do the following to clean it and then rebuild it:

Code: Select all

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
apt update
If the "BADSIG 3EE67F3D0FF405B2" error remains when you upgrade, run this command to import the latest signatures for that key:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 3EE67F3D0FF405B2
It may return something like the following:

Code: Select all

Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --homedir /tmp/tmp.0wl5jrwFR4 --no-auto-check-trustdb --trust-model always --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 3EE67F3D0FF405B2
gpg: requesting key 0FF405B2 from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: key 0FF405B2: "Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint Package Repository v1) <root@linuxmint.com>" 3 new signatures
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: new signatures: 3
If on the last line instead of "new signatures: X" it says "unchanged: 1" then something else is the problem.

Please let us know if this resolves it.

I have the same problem with Mint 17.3. I started having trouble with updated so I tried to restore the keys, flush the apt cache, restore the original sources, with apt, aptitude, synaptic, update manager, everything...
My problem was as the op describes. I tried:

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
apt update
(again BADSIG)
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 3EE67F3D0FF405B2

"If on the last line instead of "new signatures: X" it says "unchanged: 1" then something else is the problem"
I do get unchanged: 1, however it no longer complains about BADSIG.

But instead:

W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/rosa/m ... ce/Sources Hash Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/rosa/m ... 4/Packages Hash Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/rosa/m ... 6/Packages Hash Sum mismatch

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

And this is as far as I can make it...

Are you using a proxy or could your internet connection be filtered? Try this: http://serverfault.com/a/743015. Then repeat sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/* and apt update.

I was not aware of being filtered, but yes, that seems to fix the problem.

Thank you very much!

Hello Xenopeek
Updating the import key beautifully worked for me, and removed GPG errors on
http://packages.linuxmint.com
http://extra.linuxmint.com
http://archive.ubuntu.com
Thanks :)

Hello xenopeek
just yesterday after following your suggestion to run the following commands
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
apt update

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 3EE67F3D0FF405B2

and they successfully removed the GPG errors, the next day again i got the same error of GPG

after running the commands:
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
apt update

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 3EE67F3D0FF405B2

this time they gave the output unchanged=1.

I have installed Rosa just yesterday.

Also, since the time my GPG problem was resolved yesterday, i have just installed python-numpy, python-scipy, python-sklearn, python-sklearn-doc, python-sklearn-lib, python-joblib packages.....nothing else
Can someone guide me how to root out the problem??
Thanks in Advance :)

Code: Select all

W: GPG error: http://extra.linuxmint.com rosa Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 3EE67F3D0FF405B2 Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint Package Repository v1) <root@linuxmint.com>
I have the same error, tried everything in this forum, askubuntu forum and SO...
tried to

Code: Select all

rm -rf //var/lib/apt/lists/*
mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
apt-get clea
apt-get update
didn't help...
tried to use apt-key to import the BADSIG key, it's unchanged and didn't help.
tried to delete the keyring from /etc/apt/ and then apt-key update and reimporting all missing keys, still nothing.
it seems like the sgnature is indeed invalid on the main repo.

No i'm not using proxy. if my isp does mim i wouldn't know about it....

anyone found a solution ????

I seem to have the same issue. But none of the solutions offered here solve it. Running sudo apt-get update -o Debug::Acquire::http=true results in the output below. It seems that there is a problem with reaching http://extra.linuxmint.com.

I am behind a proxy. But that seemed to have worked so far. I haven't had any problems for over a year and this issue just crept up two days ago. I seem to be able to run wget http://extra.linuxmint.com (it fetches the index page).

I know this might not be much to go on - especially given the other posts in this thread - but does someone have an idea about how to diagnose the problem or -better still- solve it.

You're the third person I know of that has had problems like this.
I think I'm one of the three :D

anyway, I fixed my problem after months of having it with the suggestion of xenopeek http://serverfault.com/questions/722893 ... m-mismatch:
1. Created file name 99fixbadproxy at: "/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/" with the lines:

Code: Select all

Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth "0";
Acquire::http::No-Cache=True;
Acquire::BrokenProxy=true;
2.

Code: Select all

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo apt-get update
Thanks so much :)

Not exactly the same issue as the posts above I suppose, but I'm having trouble contacting extra.linuxmint.com as well, apt-get update etc.

First apt-get/aptitude is trying to contact using 208.77.20.11, that fails, and then it tries with 68.235.39.11. This fails as well:

Code: Select all

Err http://extra.linuxmint.com rosa Release.gpg

W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
No idea what's going on. I'm using Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) in /etc/resolv.conf, "dig extra.linuxmint.com @8.8.8.8" says:

Code: Select all

I'll PM the output of:

Code: Select all

wget -qO- http://ipecho.net/plain; echo
mtr -4 -b -c 1 -w 68.235.39.11
directly to @xenopeek, in the hope he'll be able to check if my IP (range?) has been blocked...

We don't block IP addresses. Can you access http://extra.linuxmint.com/ in your web browser or does it show a block message from Sucuri? Only Sucuri could be blocking you and we can't check that. The most likely reason for not being able to reach extra.linuxmint.com is problem with your DNS or you're (knowingly or unknowingly) behind a bad proxy. As davenoob shared posting.php?mode=reply&f=18&t=213003#pr1171464 there is a fix you can implement on your side for bad proxies.

Hi, no I can't open http://extra.linuxmint.com in a web browser (firefox), nor using wget... I do know I'm behind an ISP filter (everything is filtered in the UAE and a lot of content is blocked, but I can't imagine why they'd block this...).

davenoob's suggestion doesn't help unfortunately.

I tried to PM you with "mtr" details, but for some reason that post is stuck in my outbox? Don't think there's anything too sensitive in the following, so here's some network details:

There's nothing we can do from our side. Linux Mint 18 will no longer use the extra.linuxmint.com repository so perhaps that will improve your situation. There's not much in the extra.linuxmint.com repository so you could just disable it to get rid of any error messages (full package list: dropbox, frostwire, google-earth-stable, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, libdvdcss-dev, libdvdcss2, opera, picasa, steam-launcher, sublime-text, torrent-search, virtualbox-5.0).
