Skylake CPU's Incompatible with 17.3 - ASUS UX303UB-DH74T

Post by HilltopsGM » Fri Mar 25, 2016 9:25 pm

I realize this is newer tech. But I thought I'd pass it on in case someone has a fix. Hopefully the next LTS will solve these issues.

Zenbook UX303UB-DH74T w/ Core i7-6500U, 12GB, 512GB SSD, 13.3in QHD+, GeForce GT 940M

Mint 17.3 installed and updated
Optimus Driver nvidia-352 (recommended) will not boot.
two finger tap and Scroll does not work
three finger tap does not work
Screen brightness will not work (the hot keys) UNLESS I do this:
STEP 1:

The first is to edit the /etc/default/grub file

Go into Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

and change the line that says:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi="

and then : update-grub

(I just copied and pasted the line below, made the change and then commented the original out with a # so that I knew what it was that I had changed)

NOTE: that there were a few different options to try with this line that I had found, but this was the only one that worked in conjunction with step 2 below.
ALSO NOTE: If you do ONLY Step 1, the slider will show up, but the screen brightness won't change. You MUST do step 2 ALSO to to get it to work!

=====================

STEP 2:

This worked for intel based systems.
You can verify you have an intel setup by opening terminal and typing:

ls /sys/class/backlight/

My system replied with:
acpi_video0 intel_backlight

(I am wondering if acpi_video1 would be the intel graphics card . . . will have to check it out some time)

Then you have to create a file (this was not in my system originally) by typing:

sudo gedit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

. . . and put this info into it:

Section "Device"
Identifier "card0"
Driver "intel"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
I tried upgrading the kernel to 3.19.0-56
No change.

On a hunch I tried I tried upgrading the kernel to 4.4.0-13 (because I could get everything to work very very well with ubuntu 15.10 and kernel 4.2.0-30) but I'd really rather run Mint.

As such, my 2 finger tap was recognized, but nothing else imporved (on Mint 17.3 with this 4.4.0-13 kernel)

As I said, Ubuntu 15.10 with the 4.2.0-30 kernel I found that EVERYTHING works marvellously (though I did have to apply the screen Hot Key fix).

Suggestions, or should I wait with bated breath for the next Mint LTS to come out?
Does everyone expect that it will solve these problems?

Did you try kernel 4.2 on Mint ?
See Update Manager > View > Linux kernels > select latest kernel 4.2 > install

Try these kernel parameters, don't forget to update grub :

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native idle=nomwait"

No I actually didn't. I figured that the latest Kernel would probably give me the best chance of success and I was running on limited time to test things out.

I don't know if this is related, but I could not get the optimus technology to work either.
I had a very similar computer to this running the Broadwell processors core (ASUS-UX303LB-DS74T) and that was working fine.

I don't know if supplying this information will help with the next LTS release or if we can fix it with 17.3, but when I try to set up the "Recommended" Drivers for the nVidia 940M I was given the nvidia-352.63-Oubuntu0.14.04.1 option:

When I tried to reboot, I couldn't get any graphics to work at all.

I got this message:

the only way "I" could recover was on the restart I selected the other Kernel and from there went to the Driver Manager and went back to the "Open Source" driver.

Then I was able to boot from both Kernels again.

Like I said, I am not sure if this helps, but I hope they can fix this with the next LTS release.

In the mean time (in case the next release does not fix these issues) does anyone have a suggestion as to how to fix this in 17.3?

Thanks
