Since several days all icons and windows appear in a new design, although I did not change or install anything.
Also the update manager and gimp are not working since then, while all other programs are running as usual.
I am using Linux Mint 17 quiana (32bit) with MATE 1.8.1
Does anyone has an idea what happened and how to reset the designs and install updates?

Re: new icon design
You don't offer much information. I would be hard-pressed to offer any advice other than do the upgrade process to the next version of Linux Mint, Rosa. What likely happened is that an update broke your system, maybe quite some time ago, and you just now noticed that GIMP and update manager are on the fritz. What sort of PPA's have you added, if any? That is sometimes a source of mischief. I don't think it is too likely a regular update from the official repositories would break GIMP or the update manager.saya16 wrote:Since several days all icons and windows appear in a new design, although I did not change or install anything.

How to upgrade without the update manager? I will tell you, but first, back up your system, if you like, before doing so. Safety first, as they say. After you have backed up whatever you want to, drop to a terminal and enter:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
I run both Windows 10 and Linux Mint 18 in dual boot with two SSDs and have other rigs running various versions of Linux. My blog.
