Thanks Jeremy for that lead, I'll give it a try. It may take me a few days to work it out but I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks for including me in this thread, you must have to divide your brain in two!

Also much to my surprise I did find that Broadcom do provide Linux drivers for the wifi card ( http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11) but they don't seem to include bluetooth drivers, yet wifi and bluetooth are on the same card.

Anyway, that's a great help.

Cheers Lindsay

try

Code: Select all

rfkill list all
and if bluetooth is blocked:

Code: Select all

rfkill unblock bluetooth
I had the same problem and this fixed it.

EDIT. If it's soft blocked then you can unblock it with that line, but if it's hard blocked then it's hardware blocked and maybe check your BIOS.

Thanks niplo, I had a look at both those suggestions, but they were not the answer this time. I'm sure it's a firmware issue.

I didn't know about rfkill before this so I'm very pleased to learn how to use it.

Jeremy that "how to" by Pilot6 certainly is a bit rough, at least for me. I've gathered all the necessary information (I've found the correct windows driver and installed git) but there are a few things that I can't understand. I'll run them by you. From now on I referring to the how to.

1. After finding the windows file "bcbtums-win8x86-brcm.inf", I then found the relevant section within that file headed ##RAMUSBE07A##, within that section was the following line " BCM20702A1_001.002.014.1483.1651.hex." Pilot6 says once you have found that : "extract that firmware from the same cab file." I don't know what he means by that.

I assume extract means copy but what is "that firmware"? Is it the whole section headed ##RAMUSBE07A##, or is it just the line BCM20702A1_001.002.014.1483.1651.hex ? If it's the whole section what do I label it?

2. To convert the firmware he says "Place the firmware file to your home folder". I know this is basic but I can't seem to move anything to my home folder except another folder. Can it be done using the terminal?

I know that's a lot of questions which show my ignorance but I'm really trying to learn as I go. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Thanks Lindsay

It might be easier to extract the whole works to your home folder. The firmware is the BCM20702A1_001.002.014.1483.1651.hex file

Once you get it copied in to the hex2hcd folder you will run

Code: Select all

./hex2hcd BCM20702A1_001.002.014.1483.1651.hex BCM20702A1-0489-e07a.hcd
sudo cp BCM20702A1-0489-e07a.hcd /lib/firmware/brcm

Thanks Jeremy that was very helpful. I've worked my way through the Pilot6 how to and compared it to the following post which is much more specific to my issue with a Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro,

http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... ovo-yoga-3

I now understand the process and method quite well. I think the point that is stopping me solving the issue is the conversion of the hex file to hcd. When I do the conversion I get a message to say that the hcd file is empty. The file consists of 140 pages and on each page is just 2 or 3 lines like the following:

#j6#############B###R#########b###r#########"###2###|###### ##h#######o!##3########
###########lXNl#####i##s#]

Somehow I don't think this as it should be! I used hex2hcd but do you have any insight about what is going wrong with the conversion?

Once again thanks for all you help. Lindsay

cd /lib/firmware/brcm
sudo wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/8kcud8xzdw2gc9b/BCM20702A1-0489-e07a.hcd
sudo modprobe -r btusb
sudo modprobe btusb

Bazzinga! It works. Very very happy.

Thanks Jeremy, that worked straight off. Everything connected exactly as it should.

I've really enjoyed doing this and for me at least it's solved. Unfortunately I can't mark it as solved because it's not my thread. Pity.

Once again thanks for all your help, I can now connect my Yoga Pro 3 to my bluetooth speakers and listen to some LOUD music.

Cheers Lindsay

Well Jermey I got back in town and was playing around with my Bluetooth again, I noticed Windoze will see the Bluetooth dongle and said everything was ok but when I went to pair under windows my device would find my pc but pc would not see the device...funny I had used it just before I did this upgrade. I went and bought another dongle and now everything works....Bluetooth wise any way.
