[CLOSED/PARTIALLY SOLVED] QCA6174 on LM18 MATE partially functional

Post by tstottqmc »

Hello, I'm somewhat new to Linux (been using it about a month) and decided to try Linux Mint 18 MATE 64-bit on a brand new Dell Latitude E5470. I installed it side-by-side with Windows 10, which came pre-installed. Everything for the most part works fine, except for the WiFi. After attempting to fix the issue for an entire day, I've finally given up and need some help. I've tried cloning the repo at https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware and copying (and properly renaming) everything directly into /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6714, as well as any other little thing I found on the internet. Sometimes I manage to get 2.4GHz connections to work, but 5GHz never works. The last thing I attempted was downloading and installing the latest firmware (1.159) from http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/m ... -firmware/ but after rebooting now the WiFi doesn't work at all. In the WiFi menu all that it shows is "Wi-Fi Network (Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter) device not ready." I am currently using a WiFi dongle to access the internet, but it is being borrowed and isn't a permanent solution.

Re: QCA6174 on LM18 MATE partially functional

did you install the 159 firmware like this?

Code: Select all

wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.159_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.159_all.deb
Run the wireless info script from ubuntuforums,

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && chmod +x wireless-info && ./wireless-info
then Copy the contents of wireless-info.txt and paste at http://www.pastebin.com and post the URL

If nothing else delete the board-2.bin file from /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1 and reboot

The correct info isn't in the board-2.bin file for that subsystem

Thanks for the help. Yes, I installed the firmware that way. Is that incorrect?

Link to wireless-info.txt: http://pastebin.com/Fk9cDPpp (note: on ethernet now, had to give the dongle back)

I tried deleting /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/board-2.bin, nothing changed.

One thing that I did notice is that in

Code: Select all

Network: Card-1: Intel Ethernet Connection I219-LM
           driver: e1000e v: 3.2.6-k bus-ID: 00:1f.6
IF: enp0s31f6 state: down mac: <filter>
Card-2: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter
           driver: ath10k_pci bus-ID: 01:00.0
IF: wlp1s0 state: down mac: <filter>
           Card-3: Atheros usb-ID: 001-004
           IF: null-if-id state: N/A speed: N/A duplex: N/A mac: N/A
           Card-4: Edimax EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS]

           IF: wlx74da388383b0 state: N/A mac: N/A
It shows a Card-3: Atheros usb-ID:001-004. Is that supposed to be there? The wireless dongle I was using is Card-4.

Somehow the firmware isn't the same version as what is in the repo's
So let's delete the old

Code: Select all

sudo rm -r /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174
Reinstall the firmware

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-firmware
or you could just double click the file you downloaded

Then delete the board-2.bin as it contains no info for your device

Code: Select all

sudo rm /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/board-2.bin
sudo rm /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/board-2.bin
For some reason Dell decided to use their own susbsytem ID's for their cards and it makes it harder for the upstream ath10k devs

Followed it to the letter, still nothing. Do you think that maybe the problem is something else, possibly something that screwed up during my attempts to fix it?

Found a post on the arch linux site that says that this will work

Code: Select all

cd /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0
sudo rm *.bin
sudo wget https://github.com/str0g/QCA6174/blob/master/hw3.0/board.bin
sudo wget https://github.com/str0g/QCA6174/blob/master/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin
reboot

Tried it, now it doesn't even show up as "device not ready," it just shows no WiFi options at all.

dmesg | grep ath10k showed this:

We can try files from someone else before I give up

Code: Select all

cd /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0
sudo rm *.bin
sudo wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/skg18r4wzsv8fkc/board.bin
sudo wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/znuoaxtxilirlhx/firmware-4.bin
Reboot

So, good news and bad news. Good news is that 2.4G is working now. Bad news is that 5G still doesn't work.

My boss said that since he needs me to have a beefier rig anyways he'll just get a better, different laptop, and then give this one to someone else (who wont need to be using linux), so I guess I'll just close this thread. Thanks for the help, though.

The correct info isn't in the board-2.bin file for that subsystem
JeremyB, thanks! It's work on Acer Aspire V3-575G-597P.
