I have been trying to install mint 18 as dual boot but installation hangs as shown:

MSI GE72 apache pro (skylake board)

Looks like hardware problem. Cpu replacement needs to be done.
I dont think there is setting in Bios to disable cpus.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

At startup edit the Grub menu entry and append kernel parameter nomodeset or modprobe.blacklist=nouveau to existing parameters quiet splash, see the release notes > Solving freezes on how to proceed.

I feel compelled to reply to this thread 6 years after since it solved a problem i had long going with my MSI. No Linux based OS (Debian/Ubuntu) would boot up correctly. I believe that happens nowadays more often with some video cards. Anyways, setting nomodeset allowed me to boot Ubuntu for the first time in my laptop. Thank you very much!

Doesn't nomodeset force the system to use software rendering instead of the GPU? In which case this isn't even a solution at all.

"Doesn't nomodeset force the system to use software rendering..." Yes. Then you install the non-FLOSS drivers that Mint can't include in a distribution.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named "manual".
