Linux Mint 18 Sarah LiveCD: Unable to login

Post by sheykandi » Tue Oct 18, 2016 12:43 pm

Hi!
When I boot from a USB with Linux Mint 18 Sarah 64bit Xfce Live, I get to the login screen and I'm asked for "Please select a user" and "Press F1 to enter a username".
What's the default username and password for the LiveCD?
I've tried several options with no success:
u: live p: live
u: mint p: mint
u: sarah p: sarah
u:mint p:[empty]
---
Why am I asked to enter user and password?
In an older PC with 32bit I boot with a LiveCD and it login automatically without asking for any usernames.
Thanks in advanced!

Hi sheykandi and welcome to the LM forum :D

I have no explanation as to why you're being prompted for a user given that the live media does not do that.

Where did you dl the iso from and did you check the sha256sum :?:

I'm pretty sure that has happened to me before. Don't know why, but basically if you just wait a bit (10-30 seconds) it will go ahead and log itself in as "mint" and everything is fine thereafter.

If waiting doesn't do anything, try "mint" (all lowercase, no quotes) as user and just leave password blank. I think that will work.

Clem wrote, that the missing autologin in the live system is a known problem on some hardware, possible "thanks" to systemd.

The 4th method: u = mint, p = <empty> is the correct one.

I downloaded 2 separate Linux mint 18 ISO's. 1 using Transmission and1 using my closest local mirror. Both checked out fine and I have the same issue with no auto login and not being able to log in using Mint as u/n and leaving p/w field blank. This is NOT an isolated case! It is a fault that needs to fixed!

Ps to previous post, both of the downloaded ISO's were Cinnamon 64 bit.

A new download will not help. The cause is a race condition with - at now - unknown - reason.

I have downloaded LM 18 Mate and LMDE 2 Editions on ISO, and burned to DVD and tested. Both auto login and seem to work fine. Seems like Cinnamon edition is the only one you stuffed up with. As it's your "flagship" edition, fixing it should be given utmost priority!
