[SOLVED] How to use xfce4 terminal vim as claws-mail external editor

Post by flyingrhino » Mon Dec 19, 2016 8:13 am

Hi,

Here's how to configure claws-mail to use vim in a regular terminal as the external editor.
Note - using gvim is easier, but I prefer classic vim in terminal.

1. Create a shell script that runs terminal + vim
In my case I use xfce, but you can replace xfce4 with 'gnome' or other prefix your terminal uses.

$ cat /usr/local/bin/clawsvim.bash

#!/bin/bash
xfce4-terminal --disable-server -x vim -f "$@"

The '--disable-server' switch is very important else the terminal will exit and your changes will not be updated in claws email.
See here for details on the command:
https://docs.xfce.org/apps/terminal/command-line

Don't forget to chmod +x the script, and add permissions.

2. Link to it in claws mail per screenshot:

And here's how to use gvim as external editor in claws mail:

Configuration -> Preferences -> Message View -> External Programs -> Text Editor ->
gvim -f %s

I personally hate gvim, but if it's gvim or other-gui-editor then gvim.

Hi, flyingrhino,

no, that does NOT function in my system. There is no problem to launch a seoond terminal with vim by calling clawsmail.bash. But nevertheless, clawsmail.vim '%s' does really nothing. But it's not a problem. I will discard Claws-Mail in the near future, because it is too buggy. Lately the program could not open the INBOX; suddenly. I lost a great amount of my mails.

What a coincidence you're saying that, because buggy thunderbird caused me to move to claws...
I've got an old claws 3.11.1 from LM17.3 repo on my 2 PCs and it works fine.
Perhaps there's something special about LM17.3 because it's the version that never caused me problems. The 17.3 repos contain old but stable packages.
LM 18.x is too unstable, not much experience with 19.
