How do I install rpm-packages?

Post by catweazle352 »

I have some software from earlier times which I only have got as a rpm-package, i.e. MuPad. LM requires to use deb-package. I read something about converting rpm to deb using alien.

Is this the recommended way of installing rpm-packages? I observed that the rpm package is basically a directory structure which shows the appropriate installation locations. So why not just copy the contents to the given locations? Because I may do mistakes or because I cannot easily uninstall them thereafter?

By the way: The forum search functionality refuses to search after "rpm". It's only three letters and too common. I did not found any way to persuade the forum search functionality to do so nevertheless. Neither using quotation marks nor using +-sign worked.

Any help appreciated

You definitely need alien for that. Even then, it's an emergency measure....

Regarding search: You have 2 choices by using the search engine of your trust in the browser:
Either add in the search expression site:forums.linuxmint.com
or install in Firefox the extension Search Site.

while you can it is not recommend plus there is usually a Ubuntu or debian package for whatever you are looking for usually but on the rare occasion that they are only in RPM then you probably have to compile from source or contact the software developer but please note they are not obligated to support you in any way unless you are paying for customer service

How to install software on LinuxMint

Short Answer: You don't.
You convert it to .deb and install the deb.
