Install Hangs at "install 3rd Party" Screen
Folks,
Long time user of mint on A N other machine (Laptop) thought I would get rid of mickeysoft on older desktop.
Runs 64 bit Live CD fine. but refuses to install from same CD (USB Boot does not seem to be supported on this M/B Bios setup)
Seems to hang at the Install third-party software screen. Does not matter if I select to install it or not. Press Continue and ............... nothing.. other apps will fire up whilst I am waiting suggesting the CD is good.
Any Ideas welcome.
Derek

Attempted same thing with 32 bit Live CD and get to the same point.....
Currently in Process of burning a 17.3 Live CD

17.3 gets stuck at 2nd screen too remarks on Disk space and Internet connection ??? must be something it is looking for at that point. Have now tried again without network connection and still getting the same..????
Totally confused as I can run the whole OS and all the apps from the live CD's it just refuses to install...

Suggestion:
Boot the Live DVD and use the following terminal command. Then hopefully you can copy/paste the complete output back here in a reply.
This will give us a look at your hardware, and possibly give us a clue on why it won't install.

According to ....... viewtopic.php?t=224832 , you may have to wait for up to 2 hours for the install to proceed past that screen. Pre-partitioning of the hard-disk with GParted may also be required.

Confirm your computer has TWO hard-drives, ie one 500GB and the other 300GB.?

Something must have happened when you tried to create the root partition ( / ) as it is only about 1 Gig in size ?Partition: ID-1: / size: 1002M used: 49M (5%) fs: overlay dev: N/A
For sure there is NOT enough room to install !

I, personally, give a minimum 20 Gigs for my root partition . .

Re: Install Hangs at "install 3rd Party" Screen
In Mint 18, ubiquity has a bug with permissions. The workable way to run ubiquity is to run
sudo ubiquity
. Via "normal way" ubiquity hangs and stucks with locale chooser and possible other things, because lack of privileges.Re: Install Hangs at "install 3rd Party" Screen

Yep I can confirm this. I will be formatting the 500GB partition for sole use of Linux.. Ideally Mint... As already stated, older PC with XP which I am dumping in favour of Linux

Re: Install Hangs at "install 3rd Party" Screen
No issue with partition sizing......... Not even got as far as creating partitions yet. Will be overwriting the whole 500GB drive if I can get past the Ubiquity Screen that requests 3rd party software (or not, depending on the tick box)richyrich wrote:Something must have happened when you tried to create the root partition ( / ) as it is only about 1 Gig in size ?Partition: ID-1: / size: 1002M used: 49M (5%) fs: overlay dev: N/A

Will give this a go once back in the same bulding as the offending machine..
Will it ask for a password??? If so what is it??
Running ubiquity from a live DVD..

Re: Install Hangs at "install 3rd Party" Screen
If that command that administrollaattori gave you (password is blank, just hit the enter key when asked) doesn't do anything for you.
Try this one after you have booted the Live Mint, and before you start the installation:
This will remove the slideshow that runs during installation. It has been the solution for others with similar problems.

A dual-hard-drive configuration may throw confusion to the LM 18.1 Installer, ie on which hard-drive to install LM.
1. You can disconnect the 2nd 300GB hard-drive and use the easier "Erase disk and install LM" auto-install-partitioning option for the 1st 500GB hard-drive. After successful install and reboot, reconnect the 2nd hard-drive.
....... You can also use the harder "Something else" manual-install-partitioning option.
2. You can keep the 2 hard-drives connected but will have to use the "Something else" manual-install-partitioning option to install LM 18.1 on the 1st 500GB hard-drive. Ensure that the "Device for boot loader installation" is the 1st 500GB hard-drive which is /sda.
For guidance on manual-install-partitioning ...

Re: Install Hangs at "install 3rd Party" Screen
I am a bit late to the party, but I got stuck at the same place and this is the first topic that web search returned so I thought I would add my solution.
Short answer - delete or resize windows partitions before installing linux mint if that is what you plan to do anyway.
Long answer - It seems that for an unknown reason whoever designed the installer thought that running ntfsresize in the "3rd party software" screen without any notice is a good idea. I restarted the installer 5 or 6 times, tried every solution from this thread, then started monitoring what the installer is doing. Having checked that network usage is low, disk io is high, I noticed in the process list that ntfsresize is running. I deleted the ntfs partitions and the installer continued without any issues.
