ASUS Zenbook UX330UA?

Postby larryw » Wed Apr 12, 2017 11:50 pm

I'm thinking of getting a ASUS Zenbook UX330US - 13.3" FHD (1920x1080) screen, 256gb SSD, 8GB RAM, 7th generation i5-7200U processor. I don't know details on Wi-Fi. I plan on a clean install (format the Windows 10 drive) and install Mint 18 Cinnamon.

I had a little trouble installing Mint 18 on a newer HP recently (Wi-Fi issues) but eventually found a kernel that solved the problem.

Does anyone have any experience with this notebook or do you think it would take Mint OK?

I have Mint 18.1 dual boot with Win10 on a UX305UA. Runs like a charm. Spend the vast majority of my time on Linux. Just use Win10 for some apps for which there is no good Linux alternative.

Thanks. I thought about dual boot but decided against it. I have too many Windows programs to switch totally but I do like to use Mint and learn more about Linux in general.

I already had Win10 on the machine and decided to try Linux. First I tried out Linux on an old laptop booting from a USB. Then installed on the old laptop. Finally when I felt comfortable with Linux I installed on the Zenbook. I set up dual boot since I still need Win10 from time to time. I love Linux and do as little as possible on Win10.

Do you have a fingerprint reader on yours? If so did you get it to work?

I recently did the dual-boot installation of Mint 18.1 Cinnamon onto my Win10 desktop. Rather than download installation and ISO files, etc., I bought a DVD from OSDisc dot com. I was amazed at the super easy installation with clear step by step instructions. I now have a reliable OS that I can use if Windoze decides to crash. I also synchronized my bookmarks, passwords to my Aspire laptop that runs Mint 18.1 without any difficulty.

Last week I bought an old HP Pavilion PC from my father-in-law. He had upgraded the HDD and RAM, along with a new Nvidia card. I used that DVD to wipe the Win Vista from the HDD and clean installed Mint 18.1 It's a real pleasure to buy something that actually delivers on the promises.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with OSDisc nor any compensation from them.

Cheers,
Bob

So far I love the 13" Asus Zenbook I bought. I installed Mint 18.1 to the drive, overwriting the Windows installation. The Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, video, sound, and all the important stuff worked "out of the box". The only major issue I had was that when I shut down the power light didn't go out and I had to press and hold it to actually finish shutting down. I upgraded the kernel to 4.8 and that problem went away.

The only minor issues are 1) the F2 (Airplane mode) function key is always on but it doesn't seem to have actually done anything, and 2) the fingerprint reader can't be used, 3) the battery applet doesn't accurately report what's happening.

I like the size and weight of this computer. Very convenient to carry or have on my lap.

My main computer is Windows 10 but my "fun" computer is now my Mint computer.

Does the back light on the keyboard work?

Yes it does. I can turn off and control brightness with the function keys.

Did any of you who have successfully installed Mint in a dual-boot setup with Win10 experience any trouble with the Mint installation process messing up Windows? I will need to resize the existing Windows partition in order to make room for the Mint installation and I seem to recall that this can mess with Windows' Master Boot Record.

If you followed a guide, can you post a link to it here? I would love to not ruin this wonderful little Zenbook. :-)
