Brightness adjustable in MATE?
Hi! I just started using MATE yesterday. I really like the look and feel. Mint is just what I wanted!
My current issue is screen brightness. I use a self-made computer with no graphic board. For protecting my eyes, I set the display brightness to the minimum but it is still too bright for me unless I use software to further adjust brightness.
In Windows Intel provides a control panel that enables various settings, and in my faded memory, Ubuntu might have had a controller for brightness adjustment.
I searched a similar function in Mint MATE but so far have not found one.
Here's an excerpt of my inxi output:
System: Kernel: 4.4.0-72-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: MATE 1.16.1 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.2) Distro: Linux Mint 18.1 Serena
Machine: Mobo: ASUSTeK model: P8Z68-M PRO v: Rev X.0x
Bios: American Megatrends v: 4003 date: 05/09/2013
CPU: Quad core Intel Core i5-2500K (-MCP-) cache: 6144 KB
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
bus-ID: 00:02.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Desktop
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 11.2.0 Direct Rendering: Yes
Is there any solution?

Re: Brightness adjustable in MATE?
Control Centre - Power Management - Display,
On AC Power tab:
Set Display Brightness to:
- there is a slider, & on mine it's set to 80% ATM.
see if that helps.

Re: Brightness adjustable in MATE?
Nothing appears when I right-click the empty space.
The help says:
"Some sliders or option boxes may be disabled if the dconf policy keys are not writable. This allows administrators to lock-down the actions that a user can select."
I changed my account to 'administrator' with no effect.
I installed dconf editor but did not find the options to enable the slider.

Re: Brightness adjustable in MATE?
I checked through dconf editor again. There seems to be no switch that enables the slider to adjust brightness.
I reduced the value of org.mate.power-manager.britness-ac but nothing changed even after rebooting.

Re: Brightness adjustable in MATE?
I am having the same issue. I recently upgraded from 18.0 where brightness controls all worked. I used to have working function keys and also the power management. HP DV6 Hardware. Functions keys do not work and there is no brightness slider.

Thank you for information. I hope the next revision solves this issue.
I installed ddccontrol but it was like this.
I don't know if this is derived from the same cause.
I installed ddccontrol but it was like this.
Code: Select all
$ ddccontrol -p
ddccontrol version 0.4.2
...
Probing for available monitors.........
Detected monitors :
No monitor supporting DDC/CI available.
If your graphics card need it, please check all the required kernel modules are loaded (i2c-dev, and your framebuffer driver).-

I forgot to sudo.
I'll find if this works.

Re: Brightness adjustable in MATE?
ddccontrol could just alter hardware settings, so it turned out to be equivalent to the buttons on the monitor.
