[SOLVED] WiFi card not detected: Mint 18.1, Intel 8086:24d, Lenovo T470

Post by Minty_Fresh » Tue May 16, 2017 4:02 pm

Hello, I've used Mint 17 on an older machine for a year with no problems (I'm not a programmer or very familiar with Linux in general), but after recently buying a Lenovo T470 and putting Mint 18.1 on, I can only access the internet through a wired connection. Any help fixing this would be appreciated:

Code: Select all

~ $ lspci -nn | grep 0280
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:24fd] (rev 78)

Code: Select all

~ $ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
enp0s31f6 no wireless extensions.

Code: Select all

~ $ rfkill list all
0: hci0: Bluetooth
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

Code: Select all

~ $ inxi -Fxz

You need the 4.8 or 4.10 kernel to support those wifi cards. Kernels can be installed with the update manager by clicking view/Linux kernels

Thanks for your reply; I have now done the following:

1) opened Software Manager
2) typed "kernel"
3) scrolled down list until I saw description: "Linux kernel image for ..."
4) did a more specific search by typing in search box: "linux-image-4.10"
5) double clicked on the "generic" version of 4.10 kernel image and saw this warning:

"You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed."

6) so went to this page: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=979657

7) and had to learn what "synaptic" was: http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/S ... 2028.shtml

8) What, there's another, different software manager than the only one I'm familiar with? Ok, so I searched "Synaptic" in my start menu and opened it

9) On the left scrolling window, instead of "all" I clicked on the three links that said "meta packages" - but only a couple things showed up, and none of them were the update to 4.10 I was looking for based on your comment?

Now I'm stumped? How do I [safely] install the new kernel?

Linux Mint Update Manager, you should find it in the program menu under administrative tools or click on the shield icon near the clock in the notification bar

Oh, yes, I was looking in the wrong "manager". I opened the "update manager" from the start menu, did as you suggested above and downloaded the newest 4.8 kernel after looking over the "Bug reports" link.

After restarting my computer, WOHOO it works!

Thanks for your help! Yay Linux community!
