LMDE3 ?!

Postby cybermarmotte » Mon May 29, 2017 4:29 am

Hye everybody,
Debian Stretch should be released soon (mid-june in the last debian newsletter). Is there any project of an LMDE3?!

Thanks

i did download a straight Debian install -- and installed it. If I recall during the install it offered an assortment of desktop GUI's to choose from; I just took the default. I've not worked much with it but it seems to be a perfectly usable system --

Getting Debian

During the install my wireless card was not supported; i had to use an RJ45 hookup to load it.

My Experience: my "research box" had also an LMDE/2 systyem and a KDE/18 system. After testing the Debian distro I had to reload the LMDE/2 O/S. whether this was caused by the Debian Distro I can't say: I have not attempted to reproduce the problem. I was hoping for online comments -- but as of now the question remains.

it's my understanding the straight Debian system lacks "non free software" that may be included with LMDE/2, -- i.e. Straight Debian is a FOSS Purist. This might result in the user needing to dig around for drivers or other updates,--

These are what you want... firmware and drivers etc is included in the isos. Go up a few directories for other builds.

Why do all the distros say 'Nonfree' :?:

Mike and Chris - If a person is trying to get an idea of what to expect from LMDE 3 perhaps the current release candidate (RC4) for Debian Stretch (9) would be more useful. https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/stretch_di_rc4/ I teste RC 2 and it worked fine with all my hardware (after installing some non-free stuff).

Pepi - The non-free isos include drivers and file formats that are proprietary. Such as MP3 is actually owned by someone (not for much longer, if I am correct) so "officially" distros frequently stay away from including the codecs as a standard install but make them easily available since they know it is unreasonable to hope people will use a distro that is too limited. Same with some hardware and their drivers. Those are unofficial versions of Debian that just include all the proprietary stuff.

Penn, I've had Sparkylinux pointing to the Debian testing repos for a few weeks, so had a pretty good idea what stretch should be like, as it's been frozen for a while now. However, I've been playing with Solus and Opensuse Tumbleweed for a few weeks too, so it's all mixed up in my head ;)

Doing this right now, would most likely break Cinnamon.
There is still work to do to use Stretch as our LMDE base. Patience is a virtue.

But feel free to install LMDE in a test system. Then change the sources to Debian 9 and update.
Let us know the result. ;)

And quite possibly MATE too. Even on Debian Sid, I'm still running MATE 1.16. You guys on LMDE have had MATE 1.18 for some time already.

This is one of the advantages of using BTRFS. Create a clone test snapshot, add to your grub, boot into it, upgrade. Test :)

If all goes bad, remove the entry from grub and drop the snapshot.

LMDE/3 wishlist,.....

1. Prevent KDE software from preempting the audio system. currently a number of KDE programs will slam the volume control to 100% when they want your attention...... Kate, K3B, Kolourpaint ... if the audio system is allocated -- likely to a music player -- please: leave it alone.

What is the next "cycle"?
i.e. What's a rough estimate for the release of Cinnamon + LMDE 3?

I'm not interested in those Xapps - they seem to be mostly duplicates of existing programs.

There has been no word on LMDE 3, we will have to be patient. And if you have Cinnamon 3.4.4 running you have the latest release of Cinnamon.
