No image thumbnail preview [SOLVED]

Post by SaladHippie »

Hello!

I've been searching the forums & can't find what I'm looking for.

When I go to upload a picture (so far, on etsy & facebook), there isn't a thumbnail preview of what's selected.

Is this normal? If so, is there an add-on available to download?

Thanks

What program are you using? When I use firefox to upload an image to "imgur" I see a list of filenames with a thumbnail of the selected image (only).

I'm using firefox

I downloaded the images onto my computer from the dropbox application.

UPDATE

I've just noticed that it's only jpg thumbnail files not previewing. png is working fine!

That's odd, whta's the FF versuion - up to date?
You might try
FF -> Menu -> Help ->Restart with addons disabled.
Funny browser stuff is usually caused by addons.
(I just checked jpg on facebook...got thumbnail for the selected image).

@Flemur When someone selects a file to upload to a website via Firefox, isn't it actually facilitated via the system's the File Manager, rather than with Firefox itself? I suspect that's where the OP isn't seeing a preview for jpeg files.

So I disabled the add-ons & restarted FF but I'm still having the same issue.

The only difference is, now 1 of the jpg files has a preview but the others still don't.
I'm sorry if I'm not explaining well enough.

No, I think I'm understanding. For clarity, what you're experiencing is, when you're selecting an image to upload from your computer to a website, a window opens to allow you to select a file from your computer. When you click on the files, preview thumbnails for the .JPG files are not appearing within the selection interface, thereby preventing you from ensuring that you're selecting the correct image to upload. Do I have that right?

What version of Linux Mint are you using? What desktop environment? If you need help determining this, enter this in a terminal window...

Code: Select all

inxi -Sz
...and post the results.

Can you open them all with other software - "Image viewer" or whatever? The files might be bad.

I'm wondering if the preview only happens for images where the thumbnail already exists. i.e., the thumbnails aren't generated on-the-fly by the selection window.

I thought "file open" dialogs would be a widget in a gnome tool kit/library or some such ?
Like this:
https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable ... ialog.html

In fact, here's something for the OP to try:
"I had to install and run the program dconf-editor.
Then go to org->gtk->settings->file-chooser, --- settings"

EDIT

I was playing with the "Attachment" upload on this forum and I see thumbnails for all images - one at a time - on the right side of the dialog, but I have thumbnails turned off in thunar, also ~/.thumbnails and ~/.cache/thumbnails are both empty.

Thank you for your help!

The previous images still don't have previews but every image I've downloaded since trying everything out have.
maybe the older images are corrupt in some way?

I've just downloaded them again and have no issue now.

thanks again, both of you :D

That makes sense.
