Random freezes during installation from usb

Post by SET001 » Wed Aug 16, 2017 4:05 am

I just bought a new desctop computer and installed win10 on it. Now I need to install Linux Mint in dual boot mode. To do so I have downloaded latest 18.2 "Sonya" - MATE (64-bit) iso image and write it on USB stick using Rufus (in ISO Image mode):
rufus.png
then I reboot my computer, select boot from USB:

d4f9feec-7bd9-4d08-b4a2-eca62985bfeb.jpg
and see Linux mint loaded. After it load I'm trying click 'install linux mint'

but then... .everything freezes. No mouse, no keyboard and after 10-20 seconds computer will automatically reboot.
Currently I'm thinking that I may have probles with USB stick and today I'm going to buy new one. But maybe problem in another place? Can any one help me with this?

Go into your machine's BIOS and check for secure boot. If you find it, disable it.

Can't find anything like that in my BIOS.
Worth to mention that freezes happens randomly. Sometimes I even can click on "Install Linux Mint" icon and select installation language. Sometimes it freezes during loading from usb.

Boot Mint in compatibility mode. And if you have an Nvidia video card, boot with the "nomodeset" parameter as well:

Also, since computer will restart after 10-20 seconds after freezing, I suppose this may be a hardware issue.
What I have is:
Intel core i7 7820x CPU
on gigabyte x299 aorus gaming 3 motherboard
with 2x Kingston DDR4-2666 16384MB PC4-21300 HyperX
and GeForce GTX 660

All I can think of is to try new USB stick. But can this be a problem?

It tells you in the error message that windwoes is hibernated. You should boot into windwoes and shutdown normally.

The problem is here in

Code: Select all

CPU 7: Machine Check Exception 5 Bank 0
RIP !INEXACT! 33
I have also tried last ubuntu LTS release and had exactly same error there.
What is it? Why I'm exreriencing this? How to solve?

You are experiencing it because Windows has not been shut down properly. You solve it by taking the advice given to you already.

seems like I fixed this with
acpi=off
in boot menu, instead of nomodeset
Successfully installed!

But when I load with

Code: Select all

acpi=off
I can`t open Drivers Manager (how are they related?). It ask password, then pop's up for a second and disappear:

Code: Select all

set@SET-SPACESHIP ~ $ gksu driver-manager
Post-install mode detected
Checking connectivity or live media...
Internet connection detected
without acpi=off, if I lucky enough, I can open Drivers Manager and select needed driver, but because of freezes I can't install it anyway.

nomodeset is still not helping

You should know that noapic leaves you with only one core enabled, even half a core if you also have acpi=off, which turns off hyperthreading.
