Cannot use mate-dock-applet

Post by abis » Tue Nov 21, 2017 8:18 am

Hi,

I want to use mate-dock-applet, which is available i the repositories, but when I try to use it, it never runs and instead it complains with:
[...]
ImportError: requiring namespace 'Gtk' version '3.0', but '2.0' is already loaded
[...]

I understand the issue, but I was under the impression that MATE is Gtk3 now?

This is on 18.2 and 18.3 BTW.
Any help would be great!

Install the latest, 0.80-1, .deb for your system architecture from this page:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mate-dock-applet
I did it, and works under LM18.3 Mate.

I’ve been wanting to install use Mate Dock Applet on Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia. I installed the app using ppa:webupd8team/mate, but it’s not working. And before that, I'd installed it with Synaptic Package Manager, but it didn't work. I'd read that Mate Dock Applet only worked on Ubuntu 16.10 and up, but I was hoping that perhaps Linux Mint 18.3 would include whatever updates and bug fixes that Ubuntu 16.10 had over Ubuntu 16.04

I did download https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mate-dock-applet, but it’s a tarball. Now maybe, at this point, I need to start another thread, but this thread is where I’m already at. I still don’t how to install a tarball. I’ve tried numerous times over the years, and I think that the times I was successful were actually accidents that I was unable to replicate. So, right now, I need someone to take my by the hand, as it were, and guide me step-by-step on how to install this.

As always, any and all help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
