32 bit Skype for Sylvia 18.3

Post by quondman »

As a complete first timer with Linux, I am trying to install Skype on the 32 bit xfce Mint 18.3. However it does not appear on the SW Manager, and the Microsoft Skype web site only has 64 bit Amd version. Where can I find a Skype version for a pentium processor ?

Hello, quondman.

I am afraid you are out of luck with any 32-bit Linux operating system, not just with Linux Mint 18.3 32-bit. :(
I'll cut it short and skip the Google searches which always ended up on the official Skye download page where only a 64-bit .deb packages is available.
This (German) Ubuntu users wiki article suggests that indeed
+ Skype 4.3 was the last release, available for 32-bit Linux systems as well
+ Skype 4.3 is now des-supported
+ the current Skype 5.x is only available for 64-bit Linux
+ users of 32-bit Linux can only switch to Sky for Web instead

At the end of 2017, there seemed to have been a solution for 32-bit users still.
Cf. the link in the last post in this thread: [Solved] Skype for Mint 18 32 bit.
But even that link does not work any longer and returns "error 404" only.

Sorry, this is all which I could figure out so far.

Hi "quondman",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup and to make sure you have a 32-bit CPU processor. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

32-bit computers and software are being phased out quickly now, so highly recommend getting a 64-bit computer.

There are other multimedia (text, audio, video) messaging applications that are more secure than Skype and some still have 32-bit versions, like "Wire" from ex-Skype developers, qTox (a tox client), ring?, Linphone, etc...

Hope this helps ...

Hi "quondman",

Well, your computer only has a 32-bit CPU with only 1gb of system memory (ram). Using Linux Mint Xfce is a good choice for this computer. FYI: Using any multimedia messaging application for video calls would be limited with this computer.

If you check around local newspapers, Amazon.com, Ebay, Newegg, local computer clubs, Internet, etc... you can probably find a used, but in good condition, 64-bit computer for around $50-$100, maybe less.

Nicht so schnell Herr Karlchen, there's still a working skype client for 32-bit: ghetto-skype. :D
https://github.com/stanfieldr/ghetto-sk ... 0_i386.deb (quondman, download >> right-click >> Open with Gdebi Package installer >> install) An audio call (don't even try video) will use about half a gig, so it should, just, work on a 1GB machine. How much longer will it work - who knows, they simply can't be trusted to actually want to make it work for us.
users of 32-bit Linux can only switch to Skype for Web instead
That did not work on my eee-pc, threw some 'not supported' error.

Need skype for a single, change-avers (elderly?) user? Pull them over to 'Wire' like this:

- install wire on your machine and get a username
- open your browser at https://app.wire.com/login/?mode=login#login
- create another account for your contact and add your own username as the only contact
- send a mail to your contact:

Dear pops,
please click: https://app.wire.com/login/?mode=login#login
and fill in the 2 boxes:
Email: poprulez@gmail.com
Password: poprulez4evr
hit 'Login' and click on the little phone to call me.

if browser asks 'can I save password'- yes
if browser asks 'can app use mic' - yes

:D :D :D 8)
