Drivers issues with new kernel 4.15.0-20

Post by tompabes » Mon May 07, 2018 2:17 pm

Hi guys,

I've been using the 4.15 kernel until now without any problems.
Today I updated from 4.15.0-15 to 4.15.0-20, as proposed by the Update Manager (I set it to check for all levels, including 4 & 5).
After rebooting, the wifi would not work and Cinnamon showed a message saying that it was running on software graphics acceleration.
So I guess there are drivers that cannot be loaded.
I tried to reboot twice, same problem. Rebooting with the previous version (4.15.0-15) solved the problem.
Is anyone else on the 4.15 kernel? Did you update to 4.15.0-20 and is it working for you?

hi tompabes...dont be suprised if a mod condenses these two posts together with the other "Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel" problems post...i posted internet connection snafu with the "20" kernel there... viewtopic.php?f=49&t=269028&p=1466705#p1466705 ...there appears to be issues across the board with different devices...its not just Mint having the problem either...its also happening on my Peppermint 8 systems as well, nor is it just AMD processors but also my intel systems as well...DAMIEN

I got issues too with an Acer Aspire R3-131T:
- WiFi doesn't work.
- External display does not work.

The good news: Even though new Linux modules had been installed, restarting with the previous Kernel works fine.

Many Linux newbies are shocked by this but it's not unusual in Linux due to a lack of backwards compatibility in general. If this wasn't true would there be so many kernels to choose from?

As mentioned it's easy to revert to an older kernel assuming you didn't delete it. Search "ubuntu boot from previous kernel" and "ubuntu make kernel change permanent". I favor answers from askubuntu and ubuntuforums.

Both issues (missing upstream dependency on linux-base 4.1 and support for the new kernel package naming convention in mintupdate) are being worked on right now. Please follow this thread: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=269028.
