k3b in Mint 19 Cinnamon

Post by beckwith »

I just install Mint 19 cinnamon. I have problems with k3b.
1) MP4 Audio Decoder plugin not found.
K3b could not load or find the MP3 decoder plugin. This means that you will not be able to create Audio CDs from MP3 files. Many Linux distributions do not include MP3 support for legal reasons.

Solution: To enable MP3 support, please install the MAD MP3 decoding library as well as the K3b MAD MP3 decoder plugin (the latter may already be installed but not functional due to the missing libmad). Some distributions allow installation of MP3 support via an online update tool.

2) Writing CD in Session At Once mode.
Using Wodim 1.1.11 - Copyright Cdrkit suite contributors
cdrecord has no permission to open the device
Modify device settings in K3b to solve this problem.
with issue (1) this ocurrs when k3b starts. libmd0 and libmd0:i386 are installed.
What do I need to install to resolve this.

with issue (2), I have never seen this problem in 15 years. There is no "Modify Device settings in k3b"
permissions on /dev/sr0 are 666.

I had the same issue with K3b couple of weeks ago. Since then I have done a fresh install of LM19 and K3b is working as it should. I suspect a software update has sorted the problem. Make sure your system is fully updated and try K3b again.

First be sure you have installed mint-meta-codecs.

Then, as k3b is a KDE application you would need to install some additional packages following the release notes
Issues with KDE apps

If you're experiencing issues with KDE apps (Okular, Gwenview, KStars..etc) run the following command:

Code: Select all

 apt install kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-data kdelibs5-plugins
And last, you will skip a lot of malfunctions running foreign apps following this recommendations.

Problem warning asking for MAD MP3 decoding library appeared again after a fresh install of LM19 Cinnamon v.2 ISO. K3b was missing a lot of plugins.
Went into Synaptic and searched for K3b and marked for complete removal. After removal, selected Edit/Fix Broken Packages, then reinstalled K3b from Synaptic. Launched without error and all plugins were present.

I installed all updates.
I completely uninstalled k3b & k3bdata
I reinstalled k3b
I tried to install "apt install kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-data kdelibs5-plugin"
but it failed... kdelib5-plugin was missing.
So the problem is unchanged.

It might have something to do with the settings in Synaptic. Have a look at section 1.2.1 in
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... amon-first
I followed these these tips before installing K3b and it works fine with all the plugins installed.

Hi beckwith,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

Obviously, everyone should have installed the 3rd party software (mint-meta-codecs) during the installation of Linux Mint.

Install "kde-runtime" and "ubuntu-restricted-extras" from the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)", then search for "K3b" right-click it and install all recommended and suggested packages, restart or at least logout and back in, then retry "K3b". I recommend installing "SoundKonverter" and "udftools" with all their recommended and suggested packages as well.

What are you trying to do with "K3b" ?

Hope this helps ...

1) I changed apt.conf/00recommends "false" to "true"
2) kde-run runtime was already installed
3) Install soundconverter & udftools.
4) could not find "k3b recommends"
5) uninstalled k3b again.
6) re-installed k3b
7) rebooted.

No change! Still the message at startup about Mad Mp3, and inability to fo record to write.

I have been using MInt since 17.2, initially as KDE, laterly as Cinnamon.
Never had this problem before.
I simply prefer the look & feel of k3b to brasero.

Hi beckwith

1.) You still have not explained what you are trying to do with superb "K3b" DVD/CD application, rip music from a CD, burn music to a CD, rip a DVD or burn a DVD, convert audio formats, etc...?

2.) With most software like "K3b", you can go into the "Synaptic Package Manager SPM", search for that application "K3b" right-click it and select all the recommended and suggested packages. It is NOT a good idea to always install all recommend and or suggested packages for all software.

3.) Although I have not heard of "Mad" before, it appears to be a specific mpeg mp3 audio codec. I think if you install the "mpg321", "mpg123", "madplay", "lame", "sox", from the "Synaptic Package Manager SPM" that will satisfy this.

" 'mpg321' is a completely Free drop-in replacement for mpg123. It has been designed to work as a drop-in replacement for mpg123, for the use of front ends, shell scripts, etc. It does all mp3 decoding using the high-quality integer-only MAD library."

OK, I thought what I was trying to do with k3b was irrelevant (and I still do).
I was trying to burn a live CD of clonezilla. I have used k3b out of preference
for many years (see my sig, I've been a Linux user since 1994). Never in all that
time have seen anything like this with k3b. My curiosity is piqued. K3b worked
fine in Mint 17.2 to 18.3. All my 18s were Cinnamon, not KDE. I used brasero
to get my CD burnt. I still want see k3b work!
So far k3b objects before really starting - about codecs I am not trying to use.
and (2) cdrecord say it has no permission.

I believe that I have solved the problem.
1) libk3b7-extracodecs was not installed. I believed that changing "false" to "true" in
aptconf and removing then reinstalling k3b would have installed the extracodecs.
Not true. I manually installed lib3b7-extracodecs. This got rid the error window
that opens as k3b starts.
Based on that success, I tried burning a CD as "root". That worked.
2) I used "chmod 4755" on /usr/bin/wodim & cdrdao.
Now I can burn a CD.

Brasero was never an alternative. It does too many things *wrong* in particular
choosing what speed to burn at. "Maximum" = "0.8x", "16x" = "0.8x", "4x" sometimes
is 4. Today "8x" was "11x" (3 times), then "8x" was "0.8x" again. And I don't want
checksums for everything I burn.

Re: k3b in Mint 19 Cinnamon

Hi beckwith,

I have been using Linux Mint KDE since 2013 and testing various other Linux Mint editions and versions. When using or testing Linux Mint Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce, I always install "K3b" from the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" with all of its recommended and suggested packages and it has always worked well for me. A lot of people install "K3b" in any edition and version of Linux Mint because it is the best DVD/CD application. "xfburn" works well too.

- In my humble opinion (IMHO), it is not necessary or advisable to manually change the "aptconf" file when you can use "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" to install recommended and or suggested packages.

- I have never had to change permissions like " 'chmod 4755' on /usr/bin/wodim & cdrdao" before, but there are numerous posts for Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04) regarding this. "K3b" used to have an option to change the permissions built-in, but I guess they forgot to include this feature when they compiled it for this new version.

Problem with k3b in 18.04 releases " cdrecord has no permission to open the device"
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1032903 ... n-the-devi

If rebooting after installing K3b did not work,
Then as you found out, it is easy to correct this issue using the command below:

Code: Select all

sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/wodim; sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/cdrdao
Anyone can check "K3b" using its Settings-> Configure K3b

As for asking what you are trying to do with K3b, that is because not everyone installs all the recommended and suggested packages, and or they forgot to install the 3rd party software (mint-meta-codecs) during the original Linux Mint installation.

You received an audio codec error message while trying to burn "Clonezilla Live" ".iso" file which is a hard drive and partition image back up application. I was not aware that "Clonezilla Live" would include audio codecs in their application?

Update: I just burned a CD and a DVD of the newest Clonezilla Live (CL) versions with K3b in Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon, and they work fine. I did notice that CL now has a new speech synthesis option, what is that? Perhaps that is why you got the audio codec error message?

Hope this helps ...

I'll go over there and check things out. As I said in my original post, I've run k3b for years. I don't understand why the package no longer pulls all of the dependencies.

Hi SaintDanBert,

You can always install "xfburn" and use that.

See this post for getting "K3b" working in Linux Mint 19.x
