[SOLVED] Can't seem to install WIFI Dongle on Mint19

Post by admanvoids » Sat Aug 04, 2018 8:41 am

Hello,

I am a complete Noob to Linux but hoping to permanently make the change from MS products both personally and professionally.

I recently installed Mint 19 on my custom built PC and purchased a dongle from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XZ5B5G9/ ... 85675&sr=2

The dongle came with a dvd but I don't have any cd/dvd rom in the computer. I assumed these were last decades technology.

When I run lsusb this relevant info shows:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:c811 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

Kernel Version:
4.15.0-29-generic

When I run update manager it says everything is up to date.
When I run driver manager it downloads packages, updates cache and then a blank window with a note at the bottom saying "No preparatory drivers are in use".

I know it might be annoying but simple step-by-step instructions would be amazing. I'm currently running internet via usb with my android. There doesn't seem to be any wi-fi options on my computer just wired.

Thank you in advance for helping me get set up on Mint. I do like it a lot so far!

From the page you linked to:
USB Wifi Adapter Support Operation System: Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP/2000, Mac OS X 10.4-10.13, Not support Linux.
In a terminal, enter this command, with the dongle plugged in:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

Edit: Ignore this and see @JeremyB's reply.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install git build-essential
git clone https://github.com/whitebatman2/rtl8821CU.git
cd rtl8821CU
make
sudo make install
Reboot, check UEFI/BIOS settings, Secure Boot needs to be disabled

Thanks for adding that. I could find no reference to what rtl device the Foktech dongle was.

If you plan on keeping your kernel updated in the 4.15 series, we can make the driver use DKMS so that it doesn't have to be compiled after the kernel install

Code: Select all

cd rtl8821CU
make clean
sudo apt install dkms
xed dkms.conf
Paste in the following

Code: Select all

MAKE="'make' all KVER=${kernelver}"
CLEAN="'make' clean"
BUILT_MODULE_NAME="8821cu"
BUILT_MODULE_LOCATION=.
PACKAGE_NAME=rtl8821cu
PACKAGE_VERSION=1.1
REMAKE_INITRD=yes
DEST_MODULE_LOCATION="/updates/dkms"
AUTOINSTALL=yes
Save and exit the

Code: Select all

cd
sudo dkms add ./rtl8821CU
Then it should build during a kernel update
