ACPI Exception Issue

Post by Manta9527 »

I am experiencing an ACPI exception issue with my attempt to install LinuxMint 19 on my home theater PC. This PC consists of the following hardware:

Gigabyte AM3+ AMD DDR3 1333 760G HDMI USB 3.0 Micro ATX Motherboard GA-78LMT-USB3
AMD FX 4-Core Black Edition FX-4300, FD4300WMHKBOX
Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB Setup (4x4GB) 1333MHz DDR3 CL9 DIMM - Black (HX313C9FBK2/8)
Seagate 2TB BarraCuda SATA 6 Gb/s 7200 RPM 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard Drive (ST2000DM006)

I ran across information about an ArchLinux user who had a similar problem and he was told that a BIOS/UEFI upgrade was needed. I wondered if this is needed for LinuxMint 19 as well.

Here is documentation on what I am dealing with:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

Pretty much. Other than switching between UEFI and BIOS/legacy mode (sometimes one of them is incorrectly implemented) your options are basically:
- flashing a BIOS/UEFI that fixes this,
- changing the kernel (unlikely to make a difference with that hardware),
- simply ignoring it unless it causes you actual problems (I don't expect it does), or
- (partially) disabling ACPI in the kernel boot options (see https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/ ... meters.txt)

Do you know if the switching between UEFI and BIOS/legacy mode can be done on a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3? Or would I need to contact the company for that information?

Go to your BIOS and see for yourself. You could do that BIOS update while you're there. ;)

I did, and it's an Award BIOS, not UEFI. I did a BIOS flash and I am still experiencing the same exception issue. I'm trying to install the 64-Bit Linux Mint 19 (Cinnamon) if it matters.

There are a couple of active kernel bug reports open for the error message you're getting, but they're not actually kernel bugs. What's happening is that the kernel is telling you that the information it's getting from your machine's BIOS is either incomplete or wrong, so it's really a problem with your machine's BIOS. As long as the machine is functioning ok and your logs are not getting spammed so they fill up your disk drive, you can ignore the messages.

It's actually what they call a hybrid EFI implementation, an Award BIOS with an EFI boot loader to be able to support larger drivers. Interesting. But true that you cannot change anything there. So that realistically leaves you with these two options I mentioned:

Sorry I haven't been back here in a while, but I had other matters to deal with. I wanted to let you all know that I recently had the components in my HTPC upgraded, including the motherboard, so I no longer need any help with this issue. Even so, I want to thank those offered solutions for this issue. :)

I'm still facing this issue, I'll start a new thread in some time, I'm stuck up with other issues.

This helped me with installing Mint, however I still have a hard time at ignoring these cause they're stopping me from shutting down from Live USB mode, where I'm trying to test a lot of things, and these exceptions might be slowing things down there, as the same things work fine after an install.

What I wanted to ask you is, did upgrading the motherboard kill this issue completely?
Do you know what exactly solved this issue(like what component) or after the upgrade you're yet to encounter that issue cause it seems to have gone?

Thanks for this. :D

If it's working after the install it's likely a kernel or firmware update fixed the issue for you. As far as testing goes, I should think most of us probably do that in a virtual machine (e.g. virtualbox), maybe something to consider, depending on what you're trying to test (i.e. not hardware compatibility).

Was testing for a hardware issue.
Yes, for software testing I do use Virtualbox (Yet to get that bidirectional thing right).
I'm stuck up with multiple issues, I'll come back to this in few days time.
Thanks for the response. :)
