Replace Android with Linux (Mint, Ubuntu, Debian or otherwise) on Android phone

Post by zaileion »

So I am forced to finally give up my trusty and deeply loved Note 4. It has all the things like removable battery, IR blaster, unlocked bootloader, SD card etc... But it's old and even with the latest roms and tons of work to convert an international ROM to work on CDMA it's finally time to move on.

That being said I would like to install some flavor of Linux on my Note 4. I have done some research but my Google foo is not rendering any results. There are some instructions on running flavors in Linux in a container within android, and others with instructions using VNC to access the GUI through loopback (127.0.0.1). There are also arm distros of many different Linux versions but no directions specifically to replace android with linux.

That brings me to the endlessly knowledgeable Mint forums where I have found results for many different questions that have not been answered elsewhere. Gotta love this forum.

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on a howto, where to start, is there a flashable zip (it's worth asking lol), or any other information?

Maybe Ubuntu touch would work but I would like to have the option to use an actual GUI like Mate or XFCE. Would be really cool of I could still make calls, or at least use cellular data. I can keep it on my carrier if I can get it to work...

Any discussion, suggestions, previously tried by others, would be appreciated since I'm going to give it a try from scratch. If anyone has ideas I would love to hear them. Hopefully I don't brick the phone lol. I know I need a pit file and something maybe ADB to push the OS to the phone...

I started at google and got this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzktqUdlp_Q

And this: https://www.androidauthority.com/instal ... ne-765408/

And more.

i wouldn't do it. having a desktop OS on a mobile device with a 5 inch screen is a bad idea. you can watch the video catweazel posted and see how hard it is to navigate the cursor with your finger.
