Linux Mint Tablet PC?

Post by mattzees » Sun Nov 04, 2018 11:01 pm

Is anyone successfully running Mint 19 on a tablet PC?

Or a better question might be, is there a tablet PC that will run Mint 19 well?

Thanks.

I doubt that... the question is not about graphical tablets (the input device for drawing), but about tablet PCs (the laptop without a keyboard).

Yes, to clarify, I'm not interested in a drawing tablet. I'm interested in a tablet PC, which is like a laptop with a touch-screen and no keyboard. Remember the Samsung Slate PCs? Like that.

Mint will NOT run on any tablet that has an ARM cpu processor. Only x86.

Yes, the PCs I'm asking about generally run on x86 or amd64 CPUs. I'm not asking about Android hardware.

I will install LM19 on a Acer Switch 3 with an Intel 4-Quad processor this week. Will also try "touchegg" which is in the repositories and adds gestures. Will report on my results - if any!

Re: Linux Mint Tablet PC? ACER problem

Post by otadmin » Sat Nov 24, 2018 9:59 pm

My attempt failed at the start as I am unable to boot from USB. Somebody put in a BIOS-password and now I have no access to it. ACER China wants EUR 150 to reset it, ACER Germany EUR 45 but I need an address in Germany. Apparently it is not possible to remove the password for the user. I even opened the tablet and disconnected the battery - still the password persists!

Will have to take a hammer to the thing after only 5 month - almost new. :x

That sucks. Is it a factory password, or was it set by the previous owner?

No idea. I bought it new in Germany, handed it in Nigeria to some IT guys to connect to the hospital server. I use it to show how a tablet can be useful in practise. Maybe they have put the password.

Acer should warn users about this security issue to take care of this as it can block the device. It is actually a secure feature esp. for cooperate use. But if one is not aware - this is what happens - scrap.

I have an ASUS TP500L

this series of laptops allows the lid to go 360° so you have the option of using a keyboard in standard laptop mode, or lift the lid and fold it over to the backside and use an onscreen kybd.

it uses an Intel Core i3-4030U CPU
