Thank you!
I am actually debating which printer to purchase. Is there also a driver for the J480 model?
I don't see a linux link on the page for that one.

At the bottom of the page.
https://driverbrother.net/brother-mfc-j497dw-driver/
try https://driverbrother.net/?s=j480, but that shows as win/mac only & maybe not for Linux systems.

do you want Colour or Black & White only ?.

In the end for various reasons I bought the J497 anyway.
Thanks to all for the helpful replies :-)
One final question:
Can anyone post a link to an explanation of how to install a driver in Linux Mint?

From the link I posted above:

Brother J497 MFC Printer
https://driverbrother.net/brother-mfc-j497dw-driver/
https://download.brother.com/welcome/dl ... 2.2.0-1.gz

A. Extract (right-click) the .gz file downloaded above.
B. Make the extracted file executable: sudo chmod +x ~/Downloads/linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1

Install Brother MFC-J497DW Drivers:
1. Turn ON printer.
2. Connect USB cable.
3. Go to location of downloaded driver (the extracted file).
4. Double-click driver and follow on-screen instructions.
5. Click Next.
6. Click Next.
7. Restart PC when finished.

Thanks so much for the instructions. :-)
Haven't succeeded printing yet....
When I double clicked, nothing happened. Not even after rebooting and trying several times.
Then I went into "Printers" and it helped me select a driver. It was possible to print a test page. But when I send a document to the printer nothing happens.
Any further suggestions?

The printer must be connected to your wifi router first, so your PC can communicate with it. In the printer settings, on the LCD screen of the printer, press Menu and go to Network (?), then set the IP Address for your wifi router if it doesn't automatically appear.

I ran the script to install the printer without first connecting it. Maybe that's partially responsible for these errors?
I notice directory on the first line there is not the full directory name.
'/home/silver2/0-File' should be '/home/silver2/0-File History/...'
Can I somehow start over and not put the installation files in a directory name that has spaces?

Code: Select all

cp: cannot stat '/home/silver2/0-File': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat 'History/Brother': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat 'printer': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat 'installation/mfcj497dwpdrv-1.0.5-0.i386.deb': No such file or directory
dpkg-deb: error: failed to read archive 'mfcj497dwpdrv-1.0.5-0.i386.deb': No such file or directory
dpkg-deb: error: failed to read archive 'mfcj497dwpdrv-1.0.5-0.i386.deb': No such file or directory
cat: DEBIAN/controllinux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1: line 2354: DEBIAN/control.tmp: No such file or directory
: No such file or directory
mv: cannot stat 'DEBIAN/control.tmp': No such file or directory
dpkg-deb: error: failed to open package info file './brother_driver_packdir/DEBIAN/control' for reading: No such file or directory
dpkg -b ./brother_driver_packdir mfcj497dwpdrv-1.0.5-0a.i386.deb
mv: target 'installation' is not a directory
linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1: line 2381: cd: too many arguments
dpkg -i --force-all mfcj497dwpdrv-1.0.5-0a.i386.deb
dpkg: error: cannot access archive 'mfcj497dwpdrv-1.0.5-0a.i386.deb': No such file or directory
###############################ls: cannot access '/usr/share/ppd/*.ppd': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access '/usr/share/cups/model/*.ppd': No such file or directory
#
Now it's showing this menu:

Code: Select all

0: beh
1: cups-brf:/
2: http
3: https
4: ipp
5: ipps
6: lpd
7: socket
8: hp
9: hpfax
10 (I): Specify IP address.
11 (A): Auto. (usb://dev/usblp0)
So maybe I can connect it to the router now, get the IP address, and enter that?
