I keep getting "the permissions of could not be determined" in file properties

Post by Jackflash » Sat Nov 10, 2018 10:43 pm

Whenever I open the properties of a file or a drive I get this message"the permissions of could not be determined".

I followed this thread viewtopic.php?t=179434

inxi -p returned;
Partition: ID-1: / size: 458G used: 14G (4%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1
ID-2: /media/graeme/Linux HDD size: 932G used: 1.5G (1%)
fs: fuseblk dev: /dev/sdb1

ls -l /mountpoint returned;
ls: cannot access '/mountpoint': No such file or directory

Any suggestions?

Is it owned by root with 600 permissions?

Edit:
that would be -rw-------

Hi Jackflash,

Can you be more specific? Is this happening on all drives with all files or just one drive and a file or some files?

Please run the command below and post the results back here

Code: Select all

lsblk -f
...
Phd21: Mint KDE 17.3 & 18.3, 64-bit Awesome OS, Ancient Dell OptiPlex 780 Core2Duo E8400 3GHz,4gb Ram,256gb SDD, Video: Intel 4 Graphics, DVD Lightscribe. Why I use KDE?:https://opensource.com/life/15/4/9-reasons-to-use-kde

Please run the command below and post the results back here

Code: Select all

lsblk -f
...
Its happening on all drives the CD drive, a USB HDD attached, a share drive from an XP computer, the File System drive and a drive which I am guessing is the HDD partition of the 500GB drive that is fitted.

As requested

lsblk -f
NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT

You posted some confusing data:
inxi -p returned;
Partition: ID-1: / size: 458G used: 14G (4%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1
ID-2: /media/graeme/Linux HDD size: 932G used: 1.5G (1%)
fs: fuseblk dev: /dev/sdb1
lsblk -f
NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
sda
└─sda1 ext4 e37a6cdf-c8d5-43e4-bcb7-44fdaa64e613 /
sdb
└─sdb1 ntfs Linux HDD 2C80BA5C80BA2BE8 /media/graeme/Linux
ls -l /mountpoint returned;
ls: cannot access '/mountpoint': No such file or directory
I can't quite figure out if the mount point is "Linux" or "Linux HDD" so post the output of both commands:

Code: Select all

ls -l /media/graeme/Linux
AND

Code: Select all

ls -l "/media/graeme/Linux HDD"
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Sorry about the confusion but I am totally new to this

ls -l /media/graeme/Linux returns ls: cannot access '/media/graeme/Linux': No such file or directory

ls -l /media/graeme/Linux HDD returns ls: cannot access '/media/graeme/Linux': No such file or directory ls: cannot access 'HDD': No such file or directory

graeme@graeme-HP-dx2810-SFF:~$ ls -l /media/graeme/LinuxHDDls: cannot access '/media/graeme/LinuxHDD': No such file or directory

Linux HDD is a USB HDD attached to the computer.

When I open "Computer" from desktop I see;
The DVD drive

HDD ST3500418AS, Type Unknown (application/octet-stream), Size Unknown, Location computer:///, Volume ; Unknown
File System HDD; Name File System, Location computer:///, Volume ; Unknown
I think these 2 are the same drive but different partitions.

The USB HDD WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0: Linux HDD, Type; Folder (inode/directory), Location computer:///, Volume Linux HDD

All of these give "the permissions of could not be determined" when I open their properties permissions tab.
If I try to Mount them I get "Unable to mount location Can't mount file"

I am trying to get my Linux machine to be seen by my XP machine as they are connected by an ethernet cable. I can open a USB drive on the XP but cannot change the contents over the ethernet cable if that makes sense.

I think it has something to with permissions.

You seem to be having multiple problems but your syntax is wrong:
ls -l /media/graeme/Linux HDD returns ls: cannot access '/media/graeme/Linux': No such file or directory ls: cannot access 'HDD': No such file or directory
Linux doesn't handle spaces in the name of things like Windows does. If it has a space you need to put quotes around it like I showed you above:

Code: Select all

ls -l "/media/graeme/Linux HDD"
